We are pursuing an observational campaign on the Helix during the Leonids shower time 2002. The goal is to study the ionized and molecular gas in this closest example of a bright planetary nebula. The Helix contains many knots of material that are partially ionized knots of molecular gas and dust formed by instabilities. These contain as much material as the nebular ring which dominates the Helix's appearance. Because the Helix nebula is approximately the size of the full moon, we can plan to use ACS to make a large mosaic of the Helix and while doing this mosaic we can also make parallel observations with the other HST instruments. One of the goals is to have some overlapping information on a set of knots in the Helix. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9700( 23) - 08/13/03 09:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We divide the Helix nebula into a 4x4 grid of ACS/WFC tiles. In this program, we observe 9 of these tiles, spending one orbit per tile. Two dither positions separated by 20 arcsec will be used in each orbit. ACS is the prime instrument. At each dither position within each orbit, ACS/WFC will obtain a single [OIII] (W502N) image and a single Halpha+[NII] (W658N) image. These two dithered positions of a tile will later be combined to remove cosmic rays, cover the ACS gap and astrometrically register the tile with its neighboring tiles. The central star of the Helix nebula is located in positions 4 and 5 of the mosaic. Because it saturates in the ~500 second exposures, the ACS subarray mode was used to read out a ~10 second exposure of the central star immediately before a longer ~400 second exposure of the nebula. Auto-parallel observations with ACS/HRC are suppressed in favor of WFPC images that cover more area in a more useful filter. In parallel, WFPC2 will obtain a CR-SPLIT [OI] (F631N) image pair at the first dither position (except for NGC7293-POS3 for which we do the HeII 4686 F469N, because it is at the center of the nebula) and a CR-SPLIT H- alpha (F656N) image pair at the second dither location. In parallel, STIS will obtain CR-SPLIT [OII] (F28X50OII) image pair at both of the dither locations. In parallel for 5 of the 9 positions (3 On-source and 2 Off-source), NICMOS/NIC3 will obtain H2 (F212N) image sequences (MULTIACCUM) at both dither locations. In parallel for 4 of the 9 positions (2 On-source and 2 Off-source), NICMOS/NIC3 will obtain H2 (F212N) and Pa-alpha (F187N) image sequences at both dither locations. All of the ACS/WFC and WFPC2 images fall on the nebula. However, 4 out of 9 of the NICMOS/NIC3 images fall off the nebula, which are labelled OFF-source below in the comments, and these will be used to measure the telescope/instrument background emission. Also, 5 out of 9 STIS images will fall off the nebula and are labelled OFF-src in the comments below.
