Abstract none supplied ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9713( 28) - 03/26/03 16:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have opted to use the WFPC2, rather than the ACS, for our program because our experience with WFPC2 will allow us to provide robust results to the Rosetta Project in a timely manner (ie within a few weeks of the execution of the hst observations, which should be well before the May 2003 meeting of the ESA Board where the final Rosetta target selection will be made). Our program includes only a single comet, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. This comet reached perihelion on 2002 August~18.3 at a heliocentric distance, of 1.29~AU. For our imaging investigation of the nucleus, we seek to minimize both the phase angle (the Sun-comet-Earth angle) and the geocentric distance (delta). The brightness of the nucleus varies as Delta squared, and the magnitude decreases with increasing phase angle at the typical rate of--. The comet is now moving progressively farther from the Earth and the Sun, but its phase angle reaches its minimum value of 4.3 deg during 2003 March~7--8. The optimal observing window is centered on March~7--8 and extends plus/minus 1 week on either side. The comet is within 30 deg of a nearly-full moon during March~16-19, so we prefer not observing during that period. Our scientific objectives should be achievable even if the hst observations are scheduled after March~19, but the later the observations the more difficult our task and the greater the risk that definitive results cannot be provided in time to influence the decision on the Rosetta target. For our exposure time estimates, we assume that the nucleus of 67P/C-G has an effective radius of 2.5~km. We expect the signal from the nucleus to dominate the measured peak pixel intensity, with the coma providing only 10%, or less, of the observed flux. Nevertheless, we are also requesting short-duration exposures (3 times shorter than our nominal exposure) to ensure non-saturation of the CCD, in case the comet is unexpectedly bright. Since all the exposure times are relatively short (300~s nominally), we can observe with several filters each orbit. In our previous work, the F675W filter has been our workhorse, as its bandpass provides the highest WFPC2 throughput, while excluding any strong cometary molecular emissions. In order to obtain color information for the nucleus, which is a serendipitous aspect of our program that essentially comes for free, we also plan to observe with the F555W and F814W filters. In order to obtain the best possible data on the shape of the nucleus, we want to take data in 8 consecutive orbits. However, we don't need full visibility windows in each. Here are two possible scenarios. Case 1, when a full visibility window is available: 2 x 300 sec F675W 2 x 300 sec F555W 2 x 300 sec F814W 2 x 100 sec F675W If the above won't fit, drop one or both F814 images. Case 2, for SAA-impacted orbits: 2 x 300 sec F675W 2 x 100 sec F675W If there is extra time available add more F675W images (alternating 300 s and 100 s to fill the orbit). If we happen to be lucky, and the RA of the comet happens to lie 90 deg forward of the ascending node of HST's orbit, then SAA impacts should not pose any problem. Otherwise, we'll just have to try to work through them as best we can. After the 8 orbit group is finished, we'd still like to observe in orbits 10, 12, and 14, if possible. But we are flexible and would be willing to consider alternative plans. Note that the apparent motion of the comet is only ~0.012arcsec/sec, or less, so guide star selection should not be as difficult as for some of our cometary programs. According to JPL, the ephemeris should be accurate to ~1 arcsec. Thus, we could reduce somewhat the values for EPHEM_UNCERT and ACQ_UNCERT, if that would make the guide star selection easier.
