Abstract Type Ia supernovae are of key importance in cosmology. Empirical relations allow their use as cosmological standard candles. The generally accepted picture is that the exploding star is a C+O white dwarf which accretes matter from a companion in a binary system. However, the nature of the companion is still unknown. It could either be another WD, or be a giant, subgiant, or main-sequence star. Calculations have shown that it is possible to distinguish among those possibilities by the effect that the supernova explosion has on the companion star. We propose to identify the companion star of the two historical well-known SNeIa through ACS imaging of the targets complemented by WFPC2 observations. A radial-velocity study of the stars in those two Galactic SNeIa has been done from ground-based facilities. To obtain the full motion vector of those stars, we plan to use ACS for high- resolution astrometry in two different epochs. That should allow to detect motion imparted during the explosion in the d ir ection perpendicular to the line of sight, down to a level of a few milliarcsecs/yr. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9729( 9) - 06/11/03 14:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We plan to devote 3 orbits of our 6 orbits in Cycle 12 (each orbit is 1 visit of a target) to WFPC2 observations of the fields of SN 1572 and SN 1006 - these observations will be coupled to the archived WFPC2 ones for SN 1572 (Tycho SN) and SN 1006 done in 1999 in Cycle 6. From the 3 orbits (=3 visits) with WFPC2, 2 will go to Tycho and 1 to SN 1006 (this choice is justified for the better use that one can make of the archived images of SN 1572 and the need to get as good proper motion measurements as possible due to its distance). Proper motions measurements down to 1 mas yr-1 would be achieved for the 70$\%$ of the candidates (unsaturated candidates in archived images). The other three orbits (corresponding to 2 visits) in Cycle 12 (1 orbit for Tycho and 2 orbits for SN 1006) plus the six orbits in Cycle 13 using the ACS/WFC would serve to provide proper motions to the level of 3-4 mas yr-1 for the rest of the stars in SN 1572 and SN 1006. The combination of the different visits done to the targets along Cycle 12 and 13 should ensure that the result proposed in the programme is achieved.
