Abstract Kepler's SNR (SN 1604 AD) is the prime example of a young Galactic SNR where the blast wave is running into the wind of the progenitor star. The interaction between the blast wave and the inhomogeneous circumstellar medium gives rise to knots, evolving on a time scale of years, that dominate the optical emission from the remnant. Also visible in the optical are fainter Balmer line filaments that exhibit a range of geometries - from normal sheet-like filaments to more diffuse clumps of emission, the latter unique to this remnant. We propose to image Kepler's SNR through several narrowband filters using ACS/WFC and WFPC2. The morphology and ionization structure of the knots will be obtained from H-alpha, [S II], and [O III] images. We will also obtain a [N II] image, which is known to be strong and spatially variable in the remnant. The proposed H-alpha images will be deep enough so that the physical scales and structure of the Balmer dominated non-radiative shocks can be investigated. Our data will be a critical part of multiwavelength studies of Kepler's SNR. They will complement Chandra and XMM X-ray data and VLA radio data, and provide a significant advance in understanding the processes of magnetic field amplification and cosmic ray acceleration in SNRs as well as the evolution and dynamics of the blast wave - circumstellar medium interaction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9731( 8) - 08/06/03 12:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The goal of this observing program is to image Kepler's SNR in the light of several optical emission lines, which arise from shock interactions between the supernova blastwave and the surrounding medium. There are several regions of interest: a cluster of bright knots in the northwest, an arc of emission in the north, two clumps of knots in the south-central area and fainter emission from the extreme western limb. ACS/WFC with narrowband filters F658N, F660N and F502N will be used to image almost the entire SNR in H-alpha, [NII] and [OIII] emission, respectively. WFPC2 with filter F673N will be used to image a part of the SNR (with the brightest knots placed on the PC chip) in [SII] emission. In addition ACS/WFC F550M continuum images will be obtained to identify and subtract stars in the field. The ACS visits (01, 02, 03) have been specified with the WFCENTER aperture and restricted to specific orientations so as to include the emission from the western edge as well as cover almost all of the northern arc. The Visit Planner results show ample schedulability even with the orientation specified. (It is to be noted that PAs 90 degrees away from those specified cannot be scheduled for the target.) The WFPC2 visit (04) has been specified with the PC1-FIX aperture and restricted to a specific range of orientations in order to include all of the bright knots within the PC chip and to cover some fraction of the rest of the remnant with the WF chips. For the ACS/WFC observations, four exposures per filter have been specified using POS TARG relative to the position of Target 1 (KEPLER-1). In each case the first exposure is at the nominal position and the second is offset by 2 pixels in x and y in order to identify hot pixels. The third exposure is offset to cover the gap in the WFC and the fourth exposure is a 2 pixel by 2 pixel offset from the third. For the narrowband filter observations, the default CR-SPLIT of 2 has been specified for each exposure. For the much shorter F550M continuum exposures NO CR-SPLIT has been specified. The 2pix by 2pix offset exposures will be used for cosmic ray rejection as well as removal of hot pixels. For the WFPC2 observations, one exposure has been specified with a WFPC2-LINE pattern and the default CR-SPLIT of 2. The ACS/WFC observations have been split into three visits. Visit 01 is three orbits long and consists of the H-alpha exposures. Visit 02 is two orbits long and consists of half the F550M and [OIII] exposures. Visit 03, three orbits long, consists of the remaining F550M and [OIII] exposures and all the [NII] exposures. The WFPC2 [SII] exposures are all in visit 04, two orbits long.
