Abstract We plan a coordinated program of spectroscopy, imaging, and spectropolarimetry of Mars during the August 2003 opposition to study the composition and physical state of surface materials and airborne aerosols. The observations include (a) Moderate spectral resolution 290 to 570 nm STIS long-slit push-broom imaging spectroscopy of Mars, to constrain the properties of airborne aerosol particles and to search for and globally map iron-bearing minerals that are diagnostic of specific past climatic conditions; (b) WFPC2 UV-VIS images designed primarily to quantify the effects of ice and dust aerosols on our STIS spectra; (c) NICMOS near-IR images to search for and globally map the presence of hydrated surface minerals; and (d) ACS multispectral polarizer images to provide critical phase function measurements needed to constrain the physical properties of the Martian surface layer. The observations are timed to take advantage of the closest approach of Mars to Earth for the next several hundred years. Images and spectra will be acquired at a spatial scale comparable to existing spacecraft orbital spectroscopy data (~10 km/pixel) and in wavelength regions not sampled by past or current Mars spacecraft instrumentation. These observations also provide complementary scientific and calibration measurements in support of current and future NASA and ESA Mars exploration missions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9738( 31) - 08/08/03 12:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will achieve our scientific objectives by making a coordinated set of Mars observations using STIS/UV, ACS/HRC, NICMOS, and WFPC2 during the opposition in late August 2003. This is a unique opportunity for exceptional and unprecedented spatial resolution from telescopic studies, as Mars will be closer to Earth than it has been or will be for centuries, reaching a maximum angular size of 25.1", corresponding to a spatial resolution of ~13 km/pixel in WFPC2/PC images and ~7 km/pixel in ACS/HRC images. At the time of these observations, the season on Mars will be near the northern winter solstice (Ls ~ 250????????????????), thus allowing spatial coverage of nearly all latitudes on the planet. a. STIS/UV and WFPC2. We will obtain four distinct sets of combined STIS/WFPC2 observations that provide views of Mars separated by ~90???????????????? in planetary longitude. Each set is defined as three orbits of STIS CCD G430L long slit spectra of Mars (CR-split=1, SIZEAXIS2=600) arranged to span the planet nearly from limb to limb, and one orbit of twelve short WFPC2 exposures of Mars using discrete filters and the LRFs. Our planned STIS observations are identical in form to our previous successful Cycle 10 global dust storm observations (GO9052). Our Cycle 10 experience shows that with an exposure time of 1.0 sec per slit image and a spacecraft slew rate set to allow adjacent slit positions to be imaged on the sky, that it is possible to obtain, ~35 aperture positions/orbit, or to scan across most of the visible disk, except for the most foreshortened limb regions, in 3 orbits. The feasibility of our subframing technique, pointing strategy, and scanning approach have been demonstrated by our previous successful STIS-UV and STIS-VIS observations conducted in Cycles 7, 8, and 10 as part of GO programs 7276, 8152, and 9052. With an exposure time of 1 sec per slit position, the STIS ETC estimate of the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for a full resolution spectrum increases from ~10 at 320 nm to over 120 at 570 nm. Analysis of our Cycle 10 STIS spectra shows that we can easily achieve average effective S/N greater than 100 for all resolution elements by binning the full resolution (2.7 ?) data in wavelength, maintaining final spectra that still exhibit more than adequate tens of ? spectral sampling. Our planned WFPC2 observations will be obtained using 10 narrow or medium PC filters, and two LRF PC wavelengths, during one orbit either immediately preceding or following each STIS set described above. Our past experience shows that these observations provide critical spatial and spectral context needed to reconstruct our STIS slit scans. The feasibility of WFPC2 Mars observations has been demonstrated by the success of numerous previous HST programs by our group and others (e.g., programs 5493, 5832, 6741, 7276, 7792, 8152, 9052). Our Cycle 12 observation strategy will be identical to that used in, for example, program 9052. b. NICMOS. Our planned NICMOS observations will be obtained using 12 narrow and medium NIC1 and NIC2 filters designed to sample Mars atmospheric CO2, atmospheric H2O, and surface hydrated mineral absorption features, as well as to provide cross-calibration opportunities with WFPC2 images obtained around the same time. Like the STIS/WFPC2 image sets, we plan to image during four NICMOS orbits separated by ~90???????????????? in planetary longitude, timed to occur either just before or after our STIS/WFPC2 image sets, if possible. We obtained similar NICMOS observations of one hemisphere of Mars (far from opposition) during Cycle 7 as part of GO 7276 (P. James, PI). Based on that experience, plus the online NICMOS ETC, we find that images through 12 filters using 0.5 sec MULTIACCUM mode exposures and NSAMP=4 + 4 can fit into one orbit, 9738( 31) - 08/08/03 12:05 - [ 3] including time for overhead and sky background images at wavelengths > 1660 nm. c. ACS/HRC. Our planned ACS observations will be obtained using the HRC and a combination of 3 polarizers and 4 wide band filters. The observations are designed to sample 3 polarization states, required to determine the Stokes parameter, the widest possible wavelength range, required to separate surface vs. atmospheric contributions to polarization, and 5 phase angles to allow modeling of the magnitude and minimum of the Polarization Opposition Effect. Based on recent experience using ACS to image Mars as part of Cycle 11 program GO 9384 (P. James, PI), plus the online ACS ETC, we find that images through 3 polarizers and 4 filters using exposure times between 0.2 sec (F814W) and 20 sec (F250W) can fit into one orbit, including time for instrument overhead. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: a. STIS/UV, NICMOS, and WFPC2. These observations are time-critical observations that must be obtained as close as possible to Mars closest approach to Earth on 23 August 2003. We are requesting 4 sets of observations, with each set consisting of 5 orbits: 3 for STIS/UV to scan entirely across the planet, followed (or preceded) as closely as possible by one orbit each of WFPC2 and NICMOS imaging. We require ~90???????????????? Martian longitude spacing between the sets of observations so that images and spectra of all surface regions can be obtained at two emission angles: 0????????????????-45????????????????, and 45????????????????- 90????????????????. To obtain the required ~90???????????????? spacing of Martian longitudes, the start of each set should be separated by modulo(~6 hours), so that they are evenly distributed around the planet. We ARE NOT placing any requirements on the exact starting time or Martian longitude of the starting orbit. Past experience (GO 8152, GO 9052; A. Lubenow, pers. comm.) indicates that it should be possible to schedule such ~90???????????????? spaced observations and to coordinate WFPC2, NICMOS, and STIS longitude coverage, if the 4 sets of observations are spread over several days around closest approach. This scheme worked well in 1999 and 2001. b. ACS/HRC. These observations are also time-critical because we require sampling of specific phase angles to most accurately characterize the POE curve. We are requesting 5 orbits centered on the same Martian central meridian longitude (approximately 30????????????????W) either before or after opposition, obtained at times when the phase angle of Mars is approximately 16????????????????, 13????????????????, 10????????????????, 8????????????????, and 6????????????????. (e.g., 2003 August 11, 15, 19, 22, and 25, all ????????????????1 day). c. Coordinated Observations An important secondary objective of these observations is to provide unique supporting data and calibration information for current and future NASA Mars orbiter, rover, and sample return investigations. The PI is a member of the Mars Odyssey and Mars Exploration Rover science teams and has been using previous WFPC2 observations 9738( 31) - 08/08/03 12:05 - [ 4] (GO 8152, 9052) to refine and validate the calibration of Odyssey/THEMIS visible wavelength images. Our team has also been involved with using HST data to calibrate Mars Global Surveyor imaging data, and is developing plans for calibration and validation of imaging instruments on NASA's 2005 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission based on data obtained by HST. We therefore request as much advance notice as possible regarding the exact time for which these observations are actually scheduled.
