Abstract We propose to obtain ACS/WFC imaging of all 17 low-redshift quasars that have black hole masses measured from reverberation mapping. This is a key sample since all secondary methods to estimate black hole mass in quasars depend on this local reverberation-mapped sample for their calibration. The best external check on reverberation mapping is whether it gives results that are consistent with the black hole mass- host galaxy correlations of nearby galaxies. For local Seyfert galaxies the reverberation masses appear consistent with the M-sigma correlation, but it is not known whether this also holds true for quasars because the stellar velocity dispersions of quasar hosts are virtually impossible to measure. We will use the ACS data to measure accurate bulge parameters (luminosity and effective radius) for the host galaxies of the reverberation-mapped quasars. From the fundamental plane or the Faber-Jackson relation, we can estimate the host galaxy velocity dispersion and test whether the reverberation masses follow the M-sigma relation even for objects with quasar luminosities. This is a crucial test if we are to trust the reverberation masses as the lowest rung on a "distance ladder" of black hole mass estimators for quasars, so that quasars can be used to trace the cosmological growth history of black holes. (Note added in Phase II: the TAC awarded us 8 orbits to observe 7 quasars and a PSF star.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9763( 4) - 05/12/03 17:22 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We request one orbit of ACS/WFC F625W imaging for each quasar. For each filter, we will split the exposure time into a sequence of short and long exposures. Brief exposures of 5 and 60 sec will be used to measure the inner PSF structure accurately, so that the quasar's PSF core will be unsaturated in the shortest exposure, and so that the medium-length exposure will obtain good S/N in the inner wings of the PSF. Then, 3 deep exposures of 550-650 s each (depending on target declination and visibility) will be obtained. This deep imaging will allow us to measure the host galaxy parameters accurately, as well as accurate rejection of cosmic rays and hot pixels. We will use a standard ACS dither pattern for optimal removal of hot pixels and cosmic rays. An accurate model of the PSF is a crucial ingredient in our analysis. PSF models calculated with the Tiny Tim program are extremely useful as noise-free models but they may not reflect the exact PSF structure in perfect detail, especially in the outer wings of the PSF that will overlap the quasar host galaxies. Therefore, we are requesting 1 orbit of additional observations to measure a high S/N PSF model from a star. The requirements are that the PSF star should have blue color, comparable to the quasars themselves, and that it should be at least as bright as the quasars themselves so that in one orbit we can obtain a PSF model with sufficient S/N to perform an adequate fit to the nuclear point source on the quasar images. We follow the strategy used successfully by McLure et al. (1999), to use the white dwarf star GRW +70D5824 (EGGR102). In one orbit, we will obtain a sequence of short exposures to measure the inner core of the PSF accurately, and also deep exposures that will burn out the PSF core but give us extremely good S/N in the outer PSF wings.
