Abstract We propose an ACS V&I imaging snapshot survey of all nearby edge-on spiral galaxies in order to measure the small scale structures in their dust extinction down to the 10pc scale. Dust and molecular gas are thightly coupled and therefore HST high resolution reddening maps can reveal information about the cold ISM phase on a scale inaccessible from the groundby any other means. We have recently discovered a sudden change in dust lane properties using ground-based data; all galaxies with rotation speeds in access of 120km/s show dust lanes, but none of the slower rotators does. This transition may be caused by a sudden change in the state of the multiphase ISM, and HST resolution imaging is needed to fully quantify this effect. Analysis will consist of full radiative transfer modeling of dust extinction with realistic, fractal like substructure and power spectrum analysis of the structure from the global to the 10pc scale. By observing a sample of galaxies with a range in structural parameters we can quantify how the cold ISM structure changes as function of radius, rotation speed, local surface density, et cetera. This information is duly needed with SIRTF soon providing a wealth of information on dust absorption, but lacking the resolution to determine the small scale distribution of the dust. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9765( 3) - 05/20/03 15:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We wish to investigate small scale dust structure as function of the galactic structural parameters. We will use the V_F606 and I_F814 passbands because they are far enough apart to provide good leverage on the reddening variations and are wide enough to have high throughput. They are also far enough to the red that the colors are not strongly influenced by the younger populations varying on small spatial scales. In order to measure a 25% dust attenuation a in a 5x5 pixel aperture at the 3 sigma level, we need a signal-to-noise of 12. The attenuation is less in I_F814 and therefore we will expose these images longer. We will expose 2x300s in V_F606 and 2x420s in I_F814 on the small, low surface brightness galaxies. These exposure times allow us to reach 23.5 V-mag arcsec^2 at a signal-to-noise of 12 in a 5x5 pixel area, sufficient on the major axis of an edge-on low surface brightness galaxy. In higher surface brightness systems we do not need to go as deep, and we will expose 2x180s in V and 2x240s in I. Including guide star acquisition and ACS overhead this adds up to 43 and 33 minutes of total visit time, respectively. We will spread the exposure times between these two extremes to match the snapshot visit time distribution of the previous HST cycles in order to maximize the possibility of them being scheduled. The cosmic ray splits are necessary; we are using almost all pixels in our power spectrum analysis, and removal by clip and replace routines would create spurious signals.
