Abstract Great progress has been made recently in accurate distance measurements of nearby galaxies beyond the Local Group based on the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). Over the last three years, snapshot surveys with HST have provided us with the TRGB distances for more than a hundred nearby galaxies obtained with an accuracy of about 10%. The local velocity field within 5 Mpc exhibits a significant anisotropy which disagrees with a spherical Virgo-centric flow. The local Hubble flow is very cold, with 1-D rms deviations of ~30 km/s. Cosmological simulations with Cold Dark Matter can only realize such low dispersions with a combination of a low mean density of matter and a substantial component with negative pressure. There may be a constraint on the equation of state w=-p/rho. Our observations will concentrate on 116 galaxies whose expected distances lie within 4 - 6 Mpc, allowing us to trace a Dark Matter distribution in the Local Volume with twice the information currently available. The program is a good one for SNAP mode because the order and rate that the observations are made are not very important, as long as there is good completion over several years. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9771( 5) - 07/17/03 21:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We intend to observe nearby galaxy candidates with expected distances in the range of 4 -6 Mpc. Many of our targets are dwarf galaxies of very low surface brightness, which have been selected on the POSS-II/ESO SERC plates by Karachentseva & Karachentsev (1998, A&AS, 127, 409; 2000, A&AS, 146, 359) and then confirmed as very nearby objects in the HI observations by Huchtmeier et al. (2000, A&AS, 141, 469; 2001, A&A, 377, 801). Some of the objects that we have observed from the ground in 1 arcsec seeing are just starting to be resolved. As shown by Mendez et al. (2002, AJ, 124, 213) the TRGB distances of galaxies at 4 - 6 Mpc are inaccessible with the largest ground-based telescopes because of stellar crowding. The observing technique is driven by the requirement to get two filters within a single orbit. Since STScI recommends that snapshot observations fit within about 35 minute window, we chose to have one 800 second exposure in F606W followed by a 600 second exposure in F814W. With overhead, this takes 35 minutes. In an old stellar population characteristic of a dwarf spheroidal, the tip of the giant branch will be at absolute stellar magnitude M_I = -4.0, M_V = -2.5 (Da Costa & Armandroff 1990, AJ, 100, 162). For a galaxy at 6 Mpc ((m-M)_0 = 29.0), the TRGB will occur at I = 25.0 and V = 26.5. The ASC Exposure Time Calculator predicts that in 800 - 600 seconds, CR-split, will give S/N of 11 and 12 in V and I bands respectively. Hence adequate data for the determination of distances can be obtained within a single orbit SNAP constraint for targets within 6 Mpc. F606W is used to determine V magnitudes instead of F555W because of greater sensitivity. Our experience with this filter is that it transforms adequately to V (appreciating that the primary measure of the TRGB is based on the I magnitude; the V magnitude only provides a color discriminant). The majority of the galaxies are smaller than 3 arc-minute in size and will fit comfortably within the ACS/WFC field of view. In the 800 second exposure, the Exposure Time Calculator predicts that cosmic rays will cover a few percent of the CCD. Cosmic rays can be eliminated by comparison of the 2 CR-split exposures. Note that our goal is not to try to do extremely accurate photometry of every last star in the galaxy, but rather to be able to estimate the distance to 10% and judge the general characteristics of the stellar population. For these data we will use a photometry pipeline dedicated to ACS/WFC data, and based on one developed by Co-I Andy Dolphin for WFPC2 observations: hstphot (Dolphin 2000, PASP 112, 1383) to measure magnitudes and colors of the stars. A second work (Dolphin 2000, PASP 112, 1397) dealt with CTE and calibration of the F606W filter for WFPC2: many of the same techniques will be applicable to ACS analysis. We usually produce a color-magnitude diagram of the galaxy within one day of the data being delivered from the archive.
