Abstract We propose to carry out a census of star clusters in the disks of the nearby spiral galaxies NGC 45, NGC 1313, NGC 4395, NGC 5236 and NGC 7793. Using ACS, we will identify much fainter and older star clusters than possible in previous ground-based surveys, or even in HST imaging of more distant galaxies. For the first time, we will directly explore the connection between young "massive'' (or "super'') star clusters (YMCs) and lower-mass "open'' clusters in different star forming environments. We will test the universality of the luminosity- and mass functions of stellar clusters and establish whether the presence of YMCs is a result of a top- heavy cluster luminosity function, or follows from generally richer cluster systems. Our target galaxies span a range of morphological properties, surface brightness and star formation rate. Some of them are known from ground-based studies to host large numbers of YMCs while others have more modest cluster populations. However, previous ground-based data were restricted to luminous clusters younger than about 500 Myr. Here we will extend the search to clusters formed throughout the entire lifetime of each galaxy and reach clusters with properties typical of the Milky Way open clusters. This will allow us to close the gap between studies of extragalactic and Galactic disk clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9774( 4) - 04/21/04 10:16 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For each of our target galaxies we will observe 2-3 fields with ACS/WFC (F435W, F555W and F814W) and WFPC2 (F336W) in order to detect and age-date stellar clusters down to an estimated limiting magnitude of M(V)=-4. We thus expect to obtain samples of open cluster-like objects spanning the entire age range of the galaxy disks. While our general census, including studies of the cluster luminosity functions and rough age dating, is possible with the ACS data alone, the WFPC2 F336W data are crucual for more precise age-dating and derivation of mass functions for the subset of clusters that will be located within the WFPC2 FOV. Each field will be observed for one orbit with ACS/WFC and WFPC2, respectively. In F435W and F555W we will obtain two dithered exposures with total integration times of 680 sec. For most of our targets there is not enough time to make a similar set of dithered exposures in F814W, so in those cases the first exposure in the visit will be a shorter F814W exposure, followed by a 340 s F814W integration so that additional overheads due to serial buffer dump are avoided. The WFPC2 exposures will consist of a single (CR-SPLIT) F336W integration lasting for the full duration of the orbit (minus overheads), typically 2400 s. The pointings have been selected in order to sample representative sections of the host galaxy disks, and except for a few cases we do not put any constraints on the roll angle. Finally, we note that object magnitudes given in the target lists are integrated magnitudes for each galaxy. For the science fields themselves there are no meaningful magnitudes to quote. Typical surface brightness values in the central parts are around V=20 per square arcsec, but strong local fluctuations are expected.
