Abstract If galaxies evolve morphologically, then some should be in transition between late and early types. One proposed evolutionary mechanism is a galaxy-galaxy merger, but evolved merger products are difficult to find. Fortunately, spectroscopic surveys have now uncovered large numbers of E+A galaxies, a class of objects whose post- starburst spectra, current lack of HI gas, and pressure-supported kinematics suggest that they are the missing panel that connects the "Toomre sequence" of merging spirals with normal ellipticals and S0s. Our first HST observations of five of these galaxies are intriguing. We find a considerable range of tidally disturbed morphologies, an "E+A" fundamental plane, significant differences among the color gradients within 1 kpc (~0.8''), and populations of bright, blue globular clusters. These initial results are difficult to interpret, however, because they are drawn from a small sample of galaxies whose very blue overall colors may have selected a particular evolutionary path of E+As. Here we propose for ACS imaging of the remaining 15 E+As from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey to probe the full range of E+A properties. The proposed observations will allow us to 1) determine what fraction of the interactions that lead to E+As destroy all disk-like structures (and therefore necessarily lead to elliptical formation), 2) measure the inner color gradients and constrain the spatial distribution of stars produced as gas sinks to the center during a merger, and 3) determine whether these interactions produce globular clusters in the required numbers to account for the increased specific frequency of clusters in early-type galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9781( 3) - 05/12/03 19:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose for ACS/WFC observations through two filters (F435W and F625W) of the detailed morphology of the 15 E+A galaxies. These images will provide us with nearly identical resolution as obtained for the initial five E+A's using the WFPC2. To conservatively estimate the S/N of a detection of a compact young stellar structure in one orbit, we calculate the signal-to-noise (cf. ACS Instrument Handbook) in a 2*2 sq. pixel WFC aperture for a young star cluster (with A star SED, z=0.1 and M(V)=-13). In a CR-split 15 minute (900sec) exposure, we obtain a ~54 sigma detection in F435W and a ~58 sigma detection in F625W. We expect the galaxies' nuclei, non-axisymmetric features, and small scale zones of recent star formation to be at least as luminous. Short exposures will provide high S/N images of these galaxies --- these are not challenging observations. The large field of the WFC will allow us to reliably reach sky (critical in determining color gradients) and to identify any tidal tails, nearby dwarf irregular galaxies (such as those coalescing from the tidal tails of the Antennae merging system; Mirabel, Dottori, Lutz 1992), or globular clusters formed in these structures. There are no bright stars in the target fields. [Visit] The wide SDSS r filter (F625W) and the standard Johnson B (F435W) filter is requested, because (1) the transmission efficiency of F625W is much better than the standard Johnson R filter, and (2) the central wavelengths F435W and F625W are well separated. Two filters are necessary because we are proposing to study the inner color gradient, generate a dust map, and determine likely young globular cluster candidates on the basis of luminosity and color. High sensitivity of ACS allow us to complete imaging in both filters within one orbit or visit. [Exposure] From the former HST/WFPC2 observations, we estimate the maximun surface brightness of the most luminous E+A, averaged in one pixel, can reach SURF(R)=13. We find that Exposures longer than 200sec would exceed the CCD fullwell limits using the 'Exposure Time Calculator' in ACS home page. To avoid saturation, we divide the 900sec exposures into three (200s+350s+350s) subexposures in F625W filter. [Special Requirements] We request Target Orientation and Coordinates for each visit to make an object, its extended tidal features and associated dwarf irregular galaxies be located within the same WPC chips. So the real coordinates of each target is slightly different from the requested coordinates for the center of the WFC aperture. Using these combination of the orientation, the shifted coordinate and WFC aperture (WFC-CENTER), we were able to increase the schedulabilies of our observation. [Dithering Strategy] To improve the spatial resolution and eliminate hot pixel effectively, we request 3-points subpixel dithering (Pattern_Number=13) for F625W exposures, and 2-points subpixel dithering (Pattern_Number=12) for F435W exposures. We specifies the each dithering positions by the POS-TARG equivalent coordinates within Target Position Requirements adopting the values in ISR-ACS-2001-07.
