Abstract We seek to measure the gas-phase metallicity, dust content, and gas kinematics in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy SBS 1543+593, by observing absorption lines in the spectrum of the background QSO HS 1543+5921. The QSO shines directly through the center of the LSB galaxy, producing a damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) line. This is the lowest redshift DLA system known outside of the local group. Specifically, we wish to use the G140M grating of STIS to: a) determine the metallicity of the interstellar gas in the LSB galaxy by accurately measuring the column densities of neutral hydrogen and sulphur; and b) estimate the amount of dust present from a precise measure of the nickel column density. The grating settings chosen to acomplish these goals will also allow us to: c) characterize the kinematics of cool gas in the disk and halo of the LSB galaxy by observing the line profiles of strong low ionization species (Si II, O I, C I, C II, etc.); and d) search for absorption from NV which may arise in any highly ionized component of the ISM due to accretion of intragroup gas onto the galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9784( 7) - 07/16/03 06:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Flux in the far UV known from previous STIS G140L data (O5L301010). RA and DEC taken from DSS. They differ from the RA and DEC given in the HST Archive for the previous STIS observations by 1.5" in RA and 0.5" in DEC. ACCUMS are to be taken at three wavelength settings with the G140M grating. The first setting at 1222A covers Lya and NI, but aims to achieve a S/N lower than the other two wavelength settings. For five CVZ orbits, we achieve a S/N of ~10 per pix. The second setting is at 1272A, and covers the SII lines (as well as other lines of interest). Here, we require S/Ns of 15-20, which can be reached in 11 CVZ orbits, divided into one five and two three-orbit CVZ visits. The final setting is at 1321A, and we require 10 CVZ orbits to reach similar S/N ratios of 15-20, which can be divided into two five-orbit CVZ visits. The field is a little complicated due to the foreground galaxy and a fainter foreground late-type star which is 5 arcsec away from the QSO. However, the QSO is >= 100 times brighter in the UV than either star or galaxy, so a standard point-source ACQ should be adequate. To increase the contrast between the QSO and the galaxy and the star, which are faint in the UV, we will use the clear filter for the ACQ. All visits have the same ACQ parameters. The ACQ ETC says that T=3 sec gives a S/N of 84 over 9 pixs, with 1140 ADU at peak.
