Abstract We propose to obtain observations with STIS/FUV-MAMA of H$_2$ fluorescent lines along the cavity surrounding the star T Tau N. Since H$_2$ fluorescent lines are direct tracers of shock-excitation in low-mass star-forming regions, the high resolution achievable with STIS will allow us to delineate the region of interaction between the wind and the cloud, and to investigate the geometry of the outflow at unprecedentedly close distances to its source, < 100 AU. Our observations will allow us to confirm, map out, and provide quantitative estimates of the off-axis (wide- angle) flow for the first time. Understanding the geometry of the wind is crucial because (1) it determines whether outflows can disrupt their natal cores, and (2) it tests theories of jet production and collimation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9785( 3) - 05/15/03 08:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use the STIS/FUV-MAMA detector with the G140L grating to map the region around T-TAU and its fluorescent H2 nebulosity. We will use the ORIENT special requirement to align the slit in the sky along the nebula. The optimal U3 angle is 62D, to which we allow a tolerance of 5D/2. The observations will take three visits, each corresponding to a different position of the slit, all with the same ORIENT requirement. The first visit will be on fixed target T-TAU. The other two visits will be at offsets of 0.25" and 0.5" along the direction perpendicular to the slit. The first and second visit will use a 0.2" slit; these two visits will cover the bulk of the H2 nebulosity and will map the edges of the envelope cavity closer to the star. In the third visit, we will use a slit width of 0.5"; with this configuration, we will be able to map the outer extent of the H2 nebulosity, both on the north and on south lobes of the cavity around T Tau. Each visit will have three exposures. The first exposure will be an STIS/CCD acquisition exposure of T-TAU. This will be followed by 2 exposures with STIS/FUV-MAMA, G140L to cover two orbits per visit.
