Abstract Essentially all well-characterized preplanetary nebulae (PPNe)-- objects in transition between the AGB and planetary nebula evolutionary phases - are bipolar, whereas the mass-loss envelopes of AGB stars are strikingly spherical. In order to understand the processes leading to bipolar mass-ejection, we need to know at what stage of stellar evolution does bipolarity in the mass-loss first manifest itself. We have recently hypothesized that most OH/IR stars (evolved mass- losing stars with OH maser emission) are very young PPNe. We are conducting a multiwavelength survey program of imaging and spectroscopic observations of such objects, using a large, morphologically unbiased sample selected using IRAS 12-to-25 micron colors. Our ongoing HST/SNAP imaging survey of the optically bright half of this sample with WFPC2 and ACS is highly succesful: 19/32 objects observed are extended with bipolar/multipolar shapes (remaining objects are unresolved). Slightly more than 50% of our sample are optically too faint or undetected but have strong near-IR counterparts -- we therefore propose a NICMOS SNAPshot imaging survey of these optically-faint OH/IR stars. These observations are crucial for determining how and when the bipolar geometry asserts itself. The results from our NICMOS survey (together with the WFPC2/ACS survey) will allow us to draw general conclusions about the onset of bipolar mass-ejection during late stellar evolution. Our complementary program of interferometric mapping of the OH maser emission in our sources is yielding kinematic information with spatial resolution comparable to that in the HST images. The HST/radio data will provide crucial input for theories of post-AGB stellar evolution. In addition, these data will also indicate whether the multiple concentric rings, "searchlight beams'', and truncated equatorial disks recently discovered with HST in a few PPNe, are common or rare phenomena. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9801( 3) - 05/23/03 07:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will image our targets in two broad-band continuum filters (F110W \& F160W) using NIC1 on NICMOS. However, we will use NIC2 if (a) the location of the source cannot be accurately specified (i.e. within 1-2 arcsec), or if the source is very red, and its J-magnitud is quite faint, i.e. it needs to be imaged in H and K (multiwavelength data are essential to analyse the light from these heavily extincted objects). Our analysis of several PPNe (Sahai et al. 1999a, b, c) shows that (1) in most PPNe, the nebular brightness shows a very large dynamic range ($\gtrsim 10^3$), and (2) the faintest interesting morphological features such as the extremities of the polar lobes, concentric arcs, or truncated equatorial disks have surface brightnesses typically $\sim$ 18 mag/arcsec$^2$ in the H-band. All objects in our source list appear in the 2MASS catalog, with J \& H magnitudes typically between 9-13 (objects are red, J-H typically $\gtrsim$1-2). Based on our analysis of PPNe such as Roberts 22 (Sahai et al. 1999a) and Hen 401 (Sahai et al. 1999c) which we have observed previously with NIC2 on NICMOS with similar filters (e.g. Sahai et al 1999a, b, c), we estimate that about 5-12 min of exposure time per filter per object (amounting to $\lesssim$35 min with overheads) are sufficient to image the circumstellar morphology in our sources with high dynamic range (S/N$>$20-30 in regions of intermediate brightness, S/N$>$5 for faint structures). Because of the great archival value of the images we expect to obtain, we will release the images very soon after they are acquired to the general community. We only request a 6-month proprietary period for the data, which is required to (1) verify the quality of the images and carry out necessary calibration and data reduction tasks, (2) make a preliminary assessment of the scientific potential of the images including comparison with kinematic data from radio observations of OH maser emission, and (3) publish analysis of particularly interesting objects.
