Abstract Optical STIS spectra of the jets from DG Tau, RW Aur, TH 28 and LkHa 231 obtained by us (prop IDs. 7311, 9435) show systematic transverse radial velocity shifts in the region where the flow has just been accelerated and collimated (Bacciotti et al, 2002), i.e. within about 100 AU from the source. We interpret such shifts as evidence for jet rotation. Whether YSO jets rotate is a fundamental question in star formation because it has been suggested that jets might be the way excess angular momentum is removed from the star/disk system, thereby allowing the star to accrete. In particular it is important to know if observed toroidal velocities are in agreement with predictions of magneto-centrifugal jet launching models. The limited spatial and spectral resolution of STIS in the optical however, only allows one to say qualitatively that the observed rotational velocities are in rough agreement with theory. Moreover only the resolved peripheral regions of the flow can be studied. We are proposing here to exploit the higher spatial and spectral resolution of STIS in the NUV to measure transverse jet velocity profiles. This is a task which can only be undertaken by the HST and which is ideally suited to the STIS. To measure the velocity profiles, we will observe the Mg II doublet at 2800 Angstrom (using the E230M echelle and the 6 X 0.2 slit transverse to the flow). In comparison to the optical, the NUV affords us double the spatial resolution and we will be able to detect velocity differences across the jet down to 2 km/s. Not only should we be able to determine for the first time the detailed rotational velocity profile across a jet but we also expect to spatially resolve the high velocity axial core of the jet in the NUV. Finally we add that as very few NUV observations of the initial jet beam of YSO jets are available, our datasets should be a valuable contribution to the HST archive. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9807( 9) - 07/22/04 09:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our aim is to obtain a quantitative estimate of the rotational motion of jets from T Tauri Stars, as a function of distance from the axis, and at the base of the flow. These jets emit strong lines in the NUV, between 2350 and 3000 A, and in particular a very strong MgII doublet at 2350 and 2803 A. We will observe these lines with the E230M grating centred at 2707 A, that covers the range 2300 - 3100 A. The slit orientation will be perpendicular to the jet axis, to minimise the orbits required and the effects of uneven slit illumination. Nominal spatial resolution is 0."029/pixel, while the average dispersion per pixel is lambda/60, 000, which will allow us to obtain a velocity sampling in Mg II lines of 5 - 10 km/s (extended source), and even better in the other (fainter) NUV lines. We plan to detect velocity shifts down to 1/5th of this value with subsequent analysis. We want to get in one exposure the emission of the entire transverse section of the flow, to construct position-velocity diagrams. The typical observed jet width is 0."5- 1."5, so we will use the 6"x0."2 slit. Jets are emission line sources, with only a 5-10 % continuum contribution in this wavelength range, and we checked for the position of the lines onto the detector, so we don't expect to have problems with order overlap. We will perform data calibration on our own with the provided arc-lamp spectra. The targets are bright microjets from T-Tauri stars, already observed by us in the optical in previous HST cycles. Pointing will be achieved by ACQ on the star with the CCD, then the aperture will be offset onto the jet with POS TARG and the detector changed to MAMA. The position angle of the flow, that regulates the ORIENT requirement, has been found from images taken from the ground or from the HST archive. The exposure times are determined primarily by the expected fluxes in the Mg II doublet. Scaling form the observed brightness in H_alpha and from planar shock models we expect to obtain with 4800 s exposures (in about 2 orbits) a S/N of ~ 30, satisfactory for our purposes. For the fainter jet from LKHa 321 we need 4 orbits to get S/N ~ 10, still good enough for our study.
