Abstract We propose to obtain ACS/prism observations of the UV continuum emitted by protostellar accretion disks. By combining the ACS data with simultaneous ground- based optical spectra and near-IR photometry, we will be able to observe the entire spectral energy distribution of the young stars and their disks from 1800A to 3.5um. The combined data set will solve the long-standing problem of degeneracy between reddening, spectral type, and excess emission in the analysis of such spectra by allowing us to measure reddenings directly from the 2175A bump, bolometric corrections from the UV continuum, and effective temperatures from the optical spectra. With this information in hand it will be possible for the first time to quantify the mass accretion rates, stellar radii, masses, and ages without the systematic uncertainties that have plagued previous efforts. The new data will probe the physical conditions that exist where material from the disk falls onto the star, such as filling factors, temperatures, and optical depths. We will also be able to place heavily veiled stars unambiguously in HR diagram for first time to see if these stars are on average younger than their more slowly accreting counterparts, and test whether or not the Mg II 2800A doublet traces jets close to their stars. The proposed observations will yield the first simultaneous coverage over all the principal wavelengths that these accretion disks emit; a true multiwavelength approach is the only way to clarify what goes on in accretion/outflow systems, a process common throughout astrophysics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9812( 26) - 10/20/03 11:16 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Exposures for this project are constrained by the need to measure the 2175? extinction bump and UV continuum excesses in our target objects, and by a desire to connect the UV spectra with the optical. Fluxes for all the targets are known reasonably well at 3500?, and are typically 10-14 erg cm-2 s-1 ?-1. The height of the 2175? bump relative to 2000? is about 0.5 Av for galactic reddening, so a S/N of 10 at 2000? suffices to measure Av to a precision of ~20% (0.1/0.5) from measurement between these two points. ACS resolves the extinction bump into ~ 6 pixels, so by fitting a curve it should be possible to measure the reddening to 0.1 in Av, typically five times better than current uncertainties. Existing models of UV excesses in young stars suggest that the temperature is something like 8000K - 10000K, and the reddenings range between 0.3 and 3. Using a blackbody excess of 10^4 K normalized to the excess flux at 3500?, the ACS exposure time calculator gives exposure times of 14 seconds and 7 minutes for these two reddenings, respectively, for a S/N of 10 at 2000?. If the excess is 8000K, these times become 34 seconds and 15 minutes, respectively. The range in exposure times for the same S/N on a given object owing to uncertainties in the reddening and excess spectrum is about a factor of five. Hence, our plan is to observe each object with both a short exposure and a longer exposure. The ACS/P200L configuration easily saturates the optical portion of the spectrum in most cases where the S/N in the UV is high. The short exposure will keep the bluest portion of the ACS spectrum from saturating so it can be used to connect with the ground-based spectra, while the long exposure will ensure good S/N across the 2175? extinction feature. Each ACS observation of a new target has 17.1 minutes of overhead required per star according to the ACS user manual; 6.1 minutes for guide star acquisition, 2.5 minutes for exposure setup, and 8.5 minutes for the imaging calibration acquisition exposure. With a visibility of 53 minutes, it should be possible on average to do a short and a long exposure of two stars every orbit. Our 18 targets then translate into 9 orbits. The schedulability indicates that all visits can be done during these two intervals: Nov 2 - Nov 14 2003 , and Dec 24 2003 - Jan 5 2004. There are not enough dark hours when Taurus is up at Kitt Peak for the September and February possibilities. The narrow bands of exclusion in the schedulability around 11/11/03 and 1/4/04 correspond to the moon in Taurus, and time around those dates must be avoided. The best windows for both NOAO and HST are 11/2/03 - 11/6/03 and 12/24/03 - 1/1/04. The limits on the timing requirements was chosen for the second (larger) of these intervals, but the November interval also works.
