Abstract We propose to image the rings and small inner satellites of Uranus using the High Resolution Channel of the ACS. The revolutionary capabilities of the ACS will allow us to address a variety of important questions relating to ring properties and ring- moon interactions. Observations at a range of wavelengths and phase angles will reveal the opposition surges of these rings and moons, providing information on color and surface structure. Measurements of the ring in front of the planet will provide complementary information on optical depth; any variations of optical depth with wavelength will reveal the rings' poorly-constrained population of embedded dust. The rings of Uranus are closing rapidly as the planet approaches equinox in 2007, an event that takes place only every 42 years. Using this opportunity, our observations will be repeated at different solar and terrestrial tilt angles; this sequence of images will be particularly valuable for constraining the physical thickness and packing density of the rings. We will place particular emphasis on the rotational variations of the Epsilon Ring, whose radial width (and therefore its packing density) varies by a factor of five. In addition, a set of deep exposures targeted just off the planet will enable us to detect any 4-5 km moons embedded within the ring system. Dynamicists invoke numerous such moons to "shepherd" the many sharp ring boundaries, so this will serve as a definitive test of the theory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9823( 7) - 11/10/03 15:11 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Ring Photometry: We will center on Uranus and expose long enough to approach (but not reach) saturation of the planetary disk. Typical exposure times are 180-200 s (F330W), 30 s (F435W), 15 s (F475W, F555W, F625W), 8 s (F606W), 50 s (F775W, F814W), and 200 s (F850LP). Most visits contain two each of these exposures, embedded in a dither pattern that shifts them by 2.5 pixels horizontally along the HRC pixel grid. The ring ansa will be aligned with this axis, so we hope to use the fractional shift to improve radial resolution on the rings. In some visits we will eliminate a few filters to make room for additional deep searches for small moons, as discussed below. In Cycle 12 we will use 7 orbits for ring photometry, commencing at opposition (24 August) and capturing phase angles of 0.04, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2.8 degrees, ending in mid-November. A final visit in June 2004, after Uranus's solar conjunction, will re-capture the highest phase angle but at a much smaller opening angle to Earth. Moon Search: An additional visit near opposition, consiting of three orbits, will be used to search for tiny, undiscovered "shepherding" moons in the vicinity of the rings. It will consist of very long (2.5-minute) exposures through the CLEAR or F606W filter. Although the planet will be substantially overexposed, the saturated pixels should bleed vertically and not interfere with the rings and moons. By subtracting a mean image from each individual frame. moving targets should be revealed. We will test this approach in an initial visit mid-July 2003 and adjust it as necessary for optimal sensitivity. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Calibration Justification ------------------------- None. Additional Comments ------------------- (1) Because of a bug in APT, it is not possible to select the HRC CLEAR filter. In this plan, the filter F220W has been used in its place. It is critically important that all exposures now using F220W be replaced by CLEAR. (2) The TAC approved a "test visit" (planned now as Visit 01) in July to test and optimize exposure times and pointings prior to our first science visits in mid-August. We are hoping there will be no need to modify our subsequent visit plans, but that remains a possibility. Any changes will be in the form of tweaks to exposure times, filters and POS TARG values; scheduling constraints will not change. (3) The original plan did not include the CLEAR and F850LP filters. We have recently identified these as potentially better choices to meet our science goals. The former could provide greater sensitivity to faint moons, and the latter permits shorter exposure times than the alternative F892N that we originally requested. (4) We are coordinating some of our observations with Erich Karkoschka, PI on GO-9725.
