Abstract We propose to survey nearly 500 square arcminutes of the Orion Nebula in H-alpha using the ACS/WFC, increasing the sky coverage by an order of magnitude over the sum of all previous HST observations. This survey will, for the first time, sample the majority of young stars and circumstellar environments in the extended Trapezium cluster of 2, 000 low-mass stars. Our primary goal is to determine the survival rate and statistical properties of protoplanetary disks in the type of radiation field and dynamical environment in which most stars are born. The survey will be used to search for new silhouette disks, bright proplyds, microjets, large-scale outflows, and to characterize the properties of these objects as a function of location in the nebula. We will determine accurate proper motions in regions where previous HST data exist. However, 90% of our fields will be observed with HST for the first time. This survey will provide the first complete census of pre-main sequence objects and outflows in an HII region and will constrain the extent of hazards to planet formation in such environments. The images will also provide a legacy for future stellar and nebular variability studies and proper motion measurements by providing a first epoch data base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9825( 7) - 09/22/03 11:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use ACS / WFC to observe a regular grid of pointings and visits. The mosaic will be obtained using 26 discrete visits. In each visit, four primary images will be obtained. The first pair of images, taken at the nomial pointing for the visit will be dithered 2 pixels in X and 2 pixels in Y to eliminate cosmic-rays and hot pixels. This is accomplished with the ACS-WFC-DITHER-LINE pattern. The second pair of dithered observations will be otained at an offset of 98" in the Y-pos direction using a custom LINE pattern, which in tunn invokes the ACS-WFC-DITHER-LINE pattern for dithereing. Each group of 4 ACS images in a visit will thus cover a nomial 100" x 300" field of view, provide the image-pairs needed for bad-pixel and cosmic-ray removal, and teh amount of overlap reqkuired to fill-in the gap between the ACS/WFC chips. The F658N filter that transmits the light of both H-alpha and [NII] will be used for these observations. Coordinated parallel observations will be obtained with WFPC-2. When the WFPC2 FOV falls onto the field observed by ACS, we will use the F673N filter ([SII]). so that the parallels provide new information. When the WFPC2 FOV falls outside the ACS FOV, then we will use the F656N filter (H- alpha) to extend coverage of our prime science. Since we are obtaining a regular mosaic, a specific roll-angle of U3PA = 44 degrees is specified. The porintings have been carefully tuned so that this role-angle maximizes the coverage of interesting targets within the the Orion nebula. Our grid is matched to this orientation and the ACS/WFC distrortions are carefully accounted for so that there will be no gaps in the mosaic, and the overlap between adjacent visits is at least (and only) several arc seconds, thereby maximizing the area covered by this H-alpha survey.
