Abstract We propose to measure the black-hole masses in two reverberation-mapped Seyfert 1 galaxies, NGC 3227 and NGC 4151, by using STIS spectroscopic observations of the Ca II triplet absorption features in the nuclear stellar spectra of these sources. The observations will be carried out on a TOO basis when the active nuclei are faint, thus mitigating the problem of contamination of the starlight component by the scattered light from the active nucleus. These observations will enable the first direct comparison of black-hole masses determined from stellar dynamics (the most frequently used method for quiescent galaxies) with those determined by reverberation mapping (the most frequently used method for active galaxies). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9849( 3) - 05/15/03 14:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Target-Of-Opportunity observations of either NGC 4151 or NGC 3227 whichever enters a nuclear low-state first as determined by ground-based and RXTE monitoring observationns. The goal is to obtain stellar dynamics in a long slit with STIS in order to estimate the mass of the central blackhole. The nucleus must be in the faint state so as not to badly dilute the underlying stellar absorption lines. Observations include 1 orbit to observer a radial velocity standard, a different standard selected for each galaxy. The remaining 13 orbits of the allocation will be devoted to the observations with the G750M grating centered on the redshifted location of the CaII 8500A triplet lines. We will dither along the slit to mitigate the effects of known bad/hot pixels in the STIS CCD. A single template star, HR4521, a K giant with narrow CaII lines, will be observed for each target, requiring only 1 orbit because the star is bright (V~6 mag). A high SNR template is required for the subsequent velocity dispersion analysis to derive the blackhole mass of the galaxy. This observation must be done regardless of which galaxy (NGC3227 or NGC4151) triggers the TOO. The observations consist of scanning the star along the slit to the same dither positions as done for the galaxies, as well as +/- and addition 0.25 to make sure we bracket the dither positions correctly (i.e., if postarg=0, 0 is different between the galaxies and the template star). We also scan across the slit (in the nominal dispersion direction) to map the slit function vital for comparing a point-source template with an extended source target. All of this dithering fits in 1 orbit. Also for the TOO target triggered, we will acquire a set of F160W IR direct images with NICMOS Camera 1 (NIC1) to provide information on the central nuclear light. These observations will use the standard exposure ramps and dither patterns. Internal flats taken during occultation are required to build the fringe correction frames Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- The STIS CCD fringes badly in the 8500Angstrom region, requiring a contemporaneous internal flat to provide a measurement of the fringe pattern for removal. This is essential for getting the maximum Signal-to-Noise ratio spectrum for doing detailed stellar dynamics. Flats are acquired during occultation. 1 orbit is dedicated to a template chosen for each of the TOO targets. These are HR4365 for NGC3227 and HR4521 for NGC 4151. Both are K giant stars with narrow CaII 8500A triplet absorption lines. Additional Comments ------------------- We have included full 15-orbit programs for NGC 4151 and NGC 3227, on the assumption that only one of these targets will be triggered as a TOO, with the unobserved object of the two and its corresponding NIC images and RV standard being discarded.
