Abstract We propose to obtain unsaturated ACS high-resolution images of all reverberation- mapped active galactic nuclei in order to remove the point-like nuclear light from each image, thus yielding a "nucleus-free" image of the host galaxy. This will allow investigation of host-galaxy properties: our particular interest is determination of the host-galaxy starlight contribution to the reverberation mapping observations, which is necessary for accurate determination of the relationship between the AGN continuum flux and the size of the broad Balmer-line emitting region of AGNs. Because this relationship is used to estimate black-hole masses of large samples of distant AGNs, correct determination of the slope of this relationship is critically important. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9851( 5) - 06/17/03 10:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This program seeks to acquire ACS HRC images of the nuclei of reverberation mapped Seyfert 1s using the F550M filter. This filter avoids the strong emission lines and should give us an excellent measurement of the continuum. The idea is to be able to decompose the galaxy nuclear image into the central AGN point source and the underlying host galaxy to directly measure the nuclear continuum brightness at 550nm less the underlying host galaxy starlight contribution. To avoid saturation of the nucleus, each SNAP consists of a series of short-to-long exposures of 2, 5, and 10 minutes duration. The short images are proof against saturation of the very central pixels, while the 10 minute integration should give us good S/N on the PSF wings of the nuclear point source and the surrounding host galaxy.
