Graham University of California - Berkeley N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract The emerging picture for planetesimal disks around main sequence stars is that their radial and azimuthal symmetries are significantly deformed by the dynamical effects of either planets interior to the disk, or stellar objects exterior to the disk. The cause of these structures, such as the 50 AU cutoff of our Kuiper Belt, remains mysterious. Structure in the beta Pic planetesimal disk could be due to dynamics controlled by an extrasolar planet, or by the tidal influence of a more massive object exterior to the disk. The hypothesis of an extrasolar planet causing the vertical deformation in the disk predicts a blue color to the disk perpendicular to the disk midplane. The hypothesis that a stellar perturber deforms the disk predicts a globally uniform color and the existence of ring-like structure beyond 800 AU radius. We propose to obtain deep, multi-color images of the beta Pic disk ansae in the region 15"-220" (200-4000 AU) radius with the ACS WFC. The unparalleled stability of the HST PSF means that these data are uniquely capable of delivering the color sensitivity that can distinguish between the two theories of beta Pic's disk structure. Ascertaining the cause of such structure provide a meaningful context for understanding the dynamical history of our early solar system, as well as other planetesimal systems imaged around main sequence stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9861( 9) - 02/04/04 14:42 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ UPDATE (Feb 2004): The procedure described in the next paragraph and below was tested in Visits 01-03. The roll deconvolution technique worked well. The data showed the scattered light pattern on the WFC chips when bright stars are placed at WFCENTER. We conclude that the ORIENTs we chose in Visits 01-03 were not ideal. Much of the beta Pic circumstellar disk is contaminated by scattered light. In Visits 04-10 we choose the ideal ORIENT values that will minimize contamination of our science field. These ORIENT constraints may need to be adjusted for the selection of suitable guide stars. In our Phase I we suggested an observing procedure for high contrast imaging described below. Essentially we proposed to place the star 10 arcseconds off the WFCchip in order to mitigate scattered light across the circumstellar disk of beta Pic. We would also have to observe a PSF comparison star, alfa Pic, to subtract residual scattered light. However, we have recently learned of a report, "Scatter from the ACS WFC Inter-chip Gap" by George Hartig, that suggests our science goals are feasible by placing beta Pictoris on the WFC Inter-chip gap. To our knowledge, there are no data, or planned observations, that test this procedure using real stars. However, George Hartig kindly provided his test data. We compared the PSF's of the artificial calibration source at different positions on the WFC. Our main conclusion is that placing a star on the inter-chip gap does not offer significant advantages over imaging the star directly on a WFC chip. The advantage of placing beta Pictoris (HD 39060) on the WFC CCD is that we obtain images of both disk ansae simultaneously. We plan to test this technique in our first three orbits for two filters. In three orbits we will have three telescope rolls such that beta Pic is imaged at three ORIENTs. A similar technique was used by Heap et al. with STIS to image beta Pic. If it works, we will apply the technique towards our remaining 8 allocated orbits. If it doesn't work, we will use the observing strategy proposed in our Phase I for the 8 remaining orbits, described below: The following is a description of observations as given in the Phase I. With the ACS WFC we will obtain deep images of the beta Pic disk ansae in three colors in the region 15"-220" (300- 4000 AU) radius from the star. These data will complement the ACS GTO observations of the inner disk using the HRC coronagraph (26"x29" field of view). Merging our data with the GTO data will provide a complete picture of the disk from the edge of the HRC occulting spot (0.9" radius; 17 AU) out to 4000 AU. We require three filters to determine if color gradients exist in the disk: F435W, F606W, F814W. We aim to achieve equivalent S/N for each filter. S/N as a function of integration time is given in a table: TABLE: WFC S/N achieved for V=24 mag/arcsec^-2 extended source 2x2 pix, gain=2, A5V star Five orbits are required to obtain S/N = 3 for 24 mag/arcsec^-2 in each of the three filters. 2.5 orbits will image the northeast side of the disk, the third orbit will have a 30 arcsecond spacecraft move to the southwest side of the disk, and then 2.5 orbits are used to image the southwest side of the disk at three wavelengths. beta Pic will be moved off of the WFC chip by roughly 15" . The orientation of the spacecraft will be chosen to include at least one diffraction spike in the field to verify the location of the star off the chip. Subtraction of scattered light will still be mandatory for our sensitivity goals. Therefore the observations of beta Pic in each filter must be repeated in an identical manner with a PSF star (HD 50241; V=3.3; SpT=A7V). Real Time Justification 9861( 9) - 02/04/04 14:42 - [ 3] ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The only time of year that gives the required visibility (because it has the roll range we require) is December-January. In our scheduling, we specified three somewhat narrow roll ranges that schedules the observations during the first ten days of December, 2004. Here we will use 2 out of 10 of our assigned orbits to test the new technique for high-contrast imaging on the WFC. We propose that we can provide a rapid turnaround in processing the data and choosing how the remaining 8 orbits will be scheduled. Therefore, it may be possible to complete this program by the end of December, 2003. The next opportunity will necessarily be one year later, December 2004. The main difficulty would be that the revised Phase2 would need to be scheduled and implemented within about two weeks after we submit it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9861( 9) - 02/04/04 14:42 - [ 4] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD39060 STAR, A4-A9 V-IV RA=05H47M17.09S +/- 0.1", DEC=- J2000 V = 3.85 51D03'59.45" +/- 0.1" Coordinate Source: HIPPARCOS/TYCHO_CATALOGUE Comments: Beta Pictoris was observed with the STIS occulting fingers at three roll angles.
