Graham University of California - Berkeley N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Abstract The first visible light coronagraph on HST provides contrast ratios near very bright stars that are unparalleled by ground-based observations. Vega, Fomalhaut and Beta Pictoris have dusty debris disks with structure thought to originate from the presence of yet-undetected, substellar companions. The detection of substellar companions is possible with the ACS HRC coronagraph if observations are made in two epochs. Here we propose to image Vega in two epochs within Cycle 12. We argue that in a few months interval, the sky plane motion of any companions due to parallax and proper motion is large relative to the HRC astrometric uncertainties. Likewise, we propose to obtain a second epoch image of Beta Pic and Fomalhaut within Cycle 12 to complement the single epoch imaging of the GTO program. Because Vega, Fomalhaut and Beta Pictoris are young and nearby, this imaging campaign will be sensitive to brown dwarfs and massive extrasolar giant planets at their predicted locations 40-60 AU projected radius from each star. Either positive or negative results for each system will be used to constrain the physical characteristics of massive objects hypothesized to cause the observed disk asymmetries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9862( 13) - 07/16/04 10:35 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These are ACS HRC coronagraphic observations with the 1.8" occulting spot. The observations are similar to the GTO program submitted by Holland Ford and John Krist in Cycle 12. Here, Vega and Fomalhaut are observed in consecutive orbits - one will act as a PSF reference star for the other. The observation is repeated at a second epoch, at a slightly shifted position angle for the detector. In summary, two epochs of data are obtained for Vega and Fomalhaut. However, for Beta Pictoris, our third science target, the first epoch is obtained by the GTO team (Holland Ford, John Krist, et al.). We will observe beta Pic at a second epoch, obtained approximately six months after the GTO observations. For example, if the GTO observations are scheduled in October 2003, we need to schedule these observations six months later. Since the GTO observations have not been scheduled yet, we place the beta Pic portion of this Phase II ON HOLD. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Please NOTE that the first epoch of observations for Vega and Fomalhaut (Visits 01 and 02, Orbits 01 and 02) appear to have their first scheduling opportunity beginning Dec. 28, 2003, for 12 days. In the year 2004, there is only one other scheduling opportunity during May and June. Thus, to complete this program during Cycle 12, the first epoch observations must be scheduled between Dec. 28 2003 and January 08, 2004. If it fails, then the program will be significantly delayed because Visits 01-02 must then be scheduled for May-June 2004. Then we have to wait for six months after that ( Dec. 04-Jan. 05) to get the second epoch of observation for Vega and Fomalhaut. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9862( 13) - 07/16/04 10:35 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD172167 STAR, A0-A3 V-IV RA=18H36M56.34S +/- 0.25", J2000 V = 0.0 DEC=+38D47'1.29" +/- 0.25" Coordinate Source: HIPPARCOS/TYCHO_CATALOGUE Comments: Fomalhaut will be used as a PSF subtraction star for Vega, and vice versa. The observations will be identical to the GTO team's observation. The scheduling of Visits 05-07 will depend on three things: 1) When are the GTO observations of beta Pic scheduled? 2) When are the GTO data actually taken (i.e. the scheduled dates may not be the actual dates of observation)? 3) Given the GTO observation date, what is the optimum interval to schedule the second epoch? Once #1 is ascertained, we can tentatively schedule our Visits 05-07. Until then, we place the visits ON HOLD. UPDATE: GTO observations of beta Pic made on Oct. 01, 2003. The coronagraph acquisition exposure was 30 seconds with the F606W and F202W filters combined. With filter F814W they made one exposure with 500 seconds, and a second exposure with 1935 seconds and CRSPLIT=3. They specified a Phase2 ORIENT 290 to 335. In a second orbit, in a second roll, they repeated these exposures. They specified a Phase2 ORIENT FROM -30 to -30 with respect to the first orbit. However, they changed the ORIENT FROM range from "-30D to -30D" to "-28D to -30D". Unfortunately, none of the software caught that -28 > -30 and it actually requires that the first value be less than the second. When the executed, HST got confused and just did a default roll, which is apparently 10D. Alfa Pic was observed in F814W with exposures 40s, 200s, and 400s, with an F606W+F202W acquire exposure of 30 seconds. Only one roll position in one orbit was obtained for Alfa Pic. UPDATE 3/12/04 To obtain more Fomalhaut and Vega data, we took away two orbits from beta Pic, leaving beta Pic with only one orbit. This decision permits the program to accomplish the science goals with Vega and Fomalhaut, and reduces the sensitivity for beta Pic. Beta Pic observations can take place either in March-April, or in August-September.
