Abstract In cycle 5, we were granted 40 orbits to study the early formation history of M33 by investigating the nature of the "second parameter" phenomenon among its globular star clusters. Discovered among the globular clusters of the Milky Way more than 30 years ago, the "second parameter" effect describes the degeneracy in the behavior of horizontal branch (HB) morphology with metal abundance. This degeneracy implies the existence of a second parameter, which, in addition to metal abundance, influences the morphology of the HB. We constructed (V, V-I) color-magnitude diagrams for 10 M33 halo globular clusters. From these diagrams, we measured the cluster metallicities and HB morphologies. Surprisingly, 8 of the 10 clusters display extremely red horizontal branches, with most of the HB stars lying near or on top of the red giant branch, yet their metal abundances are in the range -1.6 <= [Fe/H] <= -1.0. A likely explanation is that the halo clusters in M33 are several Gyr younger than those in the Milky Way. To test this hypothesis, we propose to obtain main sequence turnoff photometry for two of our M33 clusters with similar metallicities but vastly differing HBs - a so-called `second parameter pair.' This will help to answer the question of whether age is the second parameter among the M33 halo clusters and provide an important clue to the overall nature of the second parameter effect. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9873( 19) - 08/26/04 09:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use the ACS in WFC mode to image two M33 halo star clusters - U49 and M9. We have chosen ACS (over WFPC2) because of its superior throughput, better spatial sampling, and greater areal coverage. We plan to dither the observations in order to further improve the sampling of the PSF. Based on our existing WFPC2 photometry of these clusters, we expect an age difference of ~5 Gyr between these clusters with U49 being younger. This means that, according to Fig. 2, the LF of U49 will peak in the main sequence turnoff/subgiant branch (TO/SGB) region at V~27.6 (I~27.1) and that of M9 will be at V~28.1 (I~27.7). To distinguish between the LF peaks of these two clusters in the region of the TO/SGB, we estimate needing S/N = 10 in both filters at the level of the TO/SGB. Using the ETC for ACS (WFC, F606W and F814W, S/N=10, Kurucz G2V, default aperture size, V=28.1, I=27.7, E(B-V)=0.1, average Zodiacal light, average Bright Earth, 8 e-/ADU, CR-SPLIT=2), we find that we require 9, 000s of exposure time in F606W and 26, 000s in F814W. A preliminary reduction of our recent cycle 11 HST/ACS observations (GO-9479) of a field in M33 supports these exposure time estimates (see Fig. 3). It is important to note that even if our signal-to-noise is reduced by a factor of two by the effects of crowding, the lower panel of Fig. 2 suggests that we will still be able to distinguish an age difference of 5 Gyr between the two clusters in question. Thus, we expect our observing strategy to provide an unequivocal answer to the question we have posed in this proposal. For M33, the visibility period is 53 minutes. Orbit #1 will consist of 6 minutes for guide star acquisition, 1 (CR-SPLIT=2) 2560 sec exposure in the F606W filter, 20 sec for a <1.25" dither, and 4.0 minutes for overhead. Orbit #2 will consist of 5 minutes for guide star re-acquisition, 1 (CR-SPLIT=2) 2710 sec exposure in the F606W filter, 20 sec for a <1.25" dither, and 2.5 minutes for overhead. Each subsequent F606W orbit will be similar to this last one, which means we will need 4 orbits of F606W observations per cluster. For the F814W images, orbit #5 will consist of 5 minutes for guide star re-acquisition, 1 (CR-SPLIT=2) 2560 sec exposure, 20 sec for a <1.25" dither, and 4.0 minutes for overhead. Orbit #6 will consist of 5 minutes for guide star re-acquisition, 1 (CR-SPLIT=2) 2710 sec exposure in the F814W filter, 20 sec for a <1.25" dither, and 2.5 minutes for overhead. Each subsequent F814W orbit will be similar to this last one, which means we will need 8 orbits of F814W observations per cluster. We note that we already have 2 orbits per cluster with WFPC2/F555W and 2 orbits with WFPC2/F814W. We will attempt to combine these existing data with the proposed ACS observations to improve the precision of the deep photometry, and we can also use these WFPC2 data to help calibrate the ACS observations. We will choose a dither pattern that optimizes the sampling of the PSF. These dithered images will then be reduced in the same way as our WFPC2 images of the cluster fields in cycle 5, which were also dithered. We have a great deal of experience in doing crowded field PSF fitting photometry using the DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME software package; we will apply this reduction method to the ACS data as well. Since we are using the relative shapes of luminosity functions in the TO/SGB region as our age diagnostic, we will perform artificial star experiments to gauge the level of photometric completeness and to determine our true photometric errors at all magnitude levels. We would also like to specify a range of possible spacecraft roll angles in order to optimize coordinated parallel observations with NICMOS/NIC2, WFPC2 (by turning off auto-parallels with HRC), and STIS/CCD. Using the Visual Target Tuner, we have already checked the feasibility of this 9873( 19) - 08/26/04 09:59 - [ 3] strategy. The intent is to use NICMOS, WFPC2, and STIS to image the disk of M33 around each cluster in the IR and optical bands and thus construct J-K (e.g. Stephens et al. 2001), V-I with WFPC2, and B-R (e.g. Gregg & Minniti 1997) color-magnitude diagrams for these fields. Judging from the NICMOS CMDs of M31 globulars published by Stephens et al. (2001), our own WFPC2 observations, and using the STIS ETC, we estimate reaching a limiting magnitude (S/N~3.5) of R~28.5 with STIS, V~28.5 with WFPC2, and K~23.7 with NICMOS. This photometric depth will reveal the old turnoff of the field population in the V and R bands and likely provide our first glimpse of the helium burning red clump stars in the IR at K~23.2. These parallel data will be analyzed using the same techniques described above and will yield valuable information on the star formation history of the M33 disk, as well as an independent distance from the magnitude of the RC (Sarajedini et al. 2000; Kim et al. 2002).
