Abstract Cassiopeia A (Cas A; SN 1680) is the youngest known and closest example of an oxygen-rich, core-collapse supernova remnant. A two-year WFPC2 survey of part of the remnant yielded many new insights including realization of the stunning amount of fine-scale detail present in the ejecta, and the first precise location of the reverse shock front in the main shell via rapid emission and structural changes visible over 2 yrs. In addition, these data revealed over 100 new ejecta knots located out ahead of the forward blast wave in a small region where only a handful were known from ground-based images. We propose a follow-up survey program aimed at obtaining hi-res images of the entire remnant in the ejecta's four major emission lines. A separate set of ACS and NIC3 [Si VI] images of the NW reverse shock filaments will be taken 3-4 months following the main Cycle 12 survey images. These will allow us to the trace individual ejecta knot deceleration dynamics, excitation, and evolution during reverse shock passage. Analysis of the emission line fluxes will make use of custom shock models generated by us for Cas A. These data will also provide data on outer knot chemistry and expansion asymmetries particularly in regard to the collimation of the NE and SW jets of O, Si, Ca-rich ejecta. A major aim of this program is to acquire a superb two-year image database covering the entire remnant to allow a detailed shock physics and dynamics study. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9890( 11) - 08/15/03 11:15 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The goal of this program is to take ACS/WFC filter images of the supernova remnant Cas A which cover the whole remnant, including the NE jet and outlying fast moving emission knots. These images will produce the first full mosaic of the SNR and do it in four bands (colors) that separate out specific strong emission lines. The ACS images are to be taken in four filters with each set of filter images requiring 2 CVZ orbits. Hence, 2 CVZ orbits x 6 pointings = 12 CVZ orbits are needed to do the survey. The CVZ orbits of Cas A are highly restrictive since Cas A lies at the very southern edge of the CVZ. There are three windows in the fall 2003/winter 2004. These are: 18-19 Nov 2003 (1 day) 11-14 Jan 2004 (4 days) 08-10 Mar 2004 (2 days) The winter months are best for Cas A since previous Cas A WFPC2 images taken in the summer were strongly effected by light scattering off the OTA. In addition, the program includes a separate set of ACS/WFC and NICMOS ([Si IV] on/off band filters) images to be taken of the reverse shock front features visible along the remnant's NW emission shell. This requires an additional 4 CVZ orbits (2 for the ACS images and 2 for the NICMOS images). We have planned the ACS/WFC exposures to 2 x (2 x 500 sec) with a dither between the 2 images sets to remove interchip gap and hot pixels. In order to cover the remnant with some overlap needed to build the mosaic, we have chosen the ORIENT to be near N-S along one side of the WFC (0 and 90 deg). In addition, in order to fit into the Oct 2003-- March 2004 observing window and not exceed the 6-7 CVZ orbit limit per day (due to SAA schedulig constraints), we have broken the 12 CVZ orbit observations into two 6 orbit visits, scheduled in the 2-day CVZ window in 08-10 March 2004, with the 4 orbit, reverse-shock front ACS/NICMOS observations scheduled for the one day 18 Nov 2003 CVZ observing window. Unfortunately, we can't use the longer 4-day Jan 2004 window because the ORIENT of the ACS will not allow complete coverage of the remnant (i.e., the ACS FOV maps as diamonds rather than rectangles on the target leaving big gaps in the mosaic coverage.
