Leighly University of Oklahoma Norman Campus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) have remarkably different properties than Active Galactic Nuclei with broad optical lines. The most promising explanation for this behavior is that NLS1s have a higher accretion rate relative to Eddington (L/M) than do broad-line Seyferts. Despite uniformity in optical line properties, detailed analysis reveals a divergence of the UV emission line properties that can be traced differences in the shape of the continuum. A link with similarly divergent X-ray properties suggests that there may be variations in L/M even among NLS1s. To test this scenario, we propose UV spectroscopic of two X-ray extreme NLS1s. These observations offer the opportunity to advance our understanding in the scatter in the relationship between line width and black hole mass, to understand physics of gas in AGN optical and UV emission-line regions, and to understand recently- discovered peculiar line-less high-z quasars that may be the early universe counterpart of luminous NLS1s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9894( 5) - 05/09/03 10:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The two targets that we will observe are PHL 1092 and RXJ0439-45. Their properties are listed in Table 1. Table 1 - Target Properties and Flux Estimates Target z E(B-V) flux Wavelength Reference (erg/cm2/s/A) (Angstrom) PHL 1092 0.396 0.04 3.4e-16 6980 Blumenthal et al. 1982 5.8e-16 5500 NED V mag. 1.4e-15 3490 Zamorani et al. 1981 4.5e-16 5580 Kwan et al. 1995 RX J0439-45 0.224 0.009 9.0e-16 4900 spectrum from D. Grupe 8.0e-16 4900 spectrum from D. Grupe The features we are observing are typically more than ~500km wide so we need only low resolution spectra. We require a broad band pass as we need to observe all resonance lines from OVI lambda 1034 to MgII lambda 2800. Therefore we propose to use the G140L and G230L gratings. PHL1092 has high enough redshift that we can observe MgII from the ground. Because MgII falls very near the atmospheric cutoff in RXJ0439-45, we can't securely get it from the ground, and we propose a short G430L observation. The continua of our Cycle--7 NLS1s are similar to that of the average quasar and there is no evidence of reddening intrinsic to the quasar (Leighly 2000; Leighly & Moore 2003. We expect the same to be true for the proposed targets which are optically blue. Therefore, for feasibility calculations, we first obtained the continuum shape from the average quasar spectrum provided by STScI and redshifted it. Next, the Galactic reddening was folded in using the CCM law (Cardelli et al. 1989). Finally the continuum was scaled according to our flux estimate. We estimated the flux of PHL1092 using the average of estimates obtained from the literature (Table 1). We estimated the flux of RXJ0439-45 using two spectra provided by D. Grupe. These computations showed that the observed spectra of PHL1092 and RXJ0439-45 should be about 1.6 and 1.2 times fainter than those from the Cycle 7 target IRAS13224-3809 at a given wavelength. We note that we plan to use the 0.2" slit instead of the 0.5" slit that we used in Cycle--7 so that the geocoronal Lyman- alpha will be narrower. According to the ETC this will reduce the throughput by only 5--10%. We note that the TAC suggested that we use the 0.1" slit instead of the 0.2" slit for better resolution. Our objects have narrow lines for AGN, but they are broad compared with emission-line nebula, for example, and therefore, the enhanced resolution will not help us much. We prefer to take the small increase in throughput afforded by the 0.2" slit. We requested "0" orbits for the G430L CCD observation of RXJ0439-45 in the Phase I proposal. That is because we intend to schedule the short CCD observation in the same orbit as the MAMA observations because the CDD observation is very short (20 minutes including overheads). Constraints: Each target requires two visits. We request that the observations of a single target be done continguously, if possible, but at least within 30 days of one another. The reason is that AGN vary, and we will need to compare emission lines in the FUV and NUV, and that science will be compromised if variability is experienced between the two visits on a single target. These objects are quasars, and are expected to vary slowly; hence the 30day constraint.
