Abstract We propose to further investigate the origin of the light elements Li, Be, and B, by observing B in a group of galactic stars found to have similar O abundances but to differ significantly in their Be content. Contrary to Li, which is produced in the Big Bang and its abundance in halo stars constrains primordial nucleosynthesis and the baryonic density, Be and B are produced later by cosmic ray spallation as the galactic halo forms. Knowledge of their evolution is now being used along with that of [O/H] (and [Fe/H]) as a powerful discriminant between different models of the chemical and dynamical evolution of the galaxy. Light element abundances can be used to test these theories only if they have not been altered by destruction in stars. Recently we have identified a small number of stars characterised by the same O abundance but large differences in their Be content, which cannot be accounted for by stellar depletion (since their Li is undepleted). As neutrino-spallation contributes only to the production of isotope 11 of B, and not to Be, Be and B abundanes in the same stars will allow us to see if B scales with Be (evidence for a CR spallation origin) or with O (evidence for contribution from neutrino spallation). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9900( 5) - 07/22/03 08:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The main goal of this program is to measure the boron abundance (from the resonant doublet at 250nm) in 5 stars, of very similar characteristics, covering the magnitude range V=8.15-10.1. We were allocated a total of 18 HST primary orbits. All observations have been prepared for the STIS E230M echelle grating, using the narrow slit 0.2x0.06. Our exposure times target a S/N ~70/1 per resolution element (slightly lower for the faintest target of our sample). Exposure times have been computed by scaling (for the difference in magnitude, temperature and metallicity) UV fluxes observed at 250nm in stars of similar stellar parameters. The comparison stars we have used for this purpose are: HD94028, HD194598, and HD201889, all previously surveyed by HST+GHRS for similar scientific goals. Each target will be acquired with STIS following the sequence: GS Acq, Target Acq (with MIRROR+OII filter, except in the case of the faintest target for which the LongPass filter has been selected - see Visits 05 and 06), an ACQ/PEAK (with grating G430M and slit 0.2x0.06, as used for the science observations). Based on the STIS ETC, all our acquisitions should reach S/N > 100, and all our ACQ/PEAK should collect much more than the required 80, 000 electrons. Target coordinates: because of their brightness, coordinates, magnitudes, colour indexes, proper motions, and parallaxes are from the "Hipparcos & Tycho catalogue". Visits Summary: one target requires 2 CVZ orbits (requested at Phase1, cf Visit01), 2 targets require 4 orbits each (Visit02 and 03), 1 target requires 3 orbits (Visit04), and the 5th target (the faintest) requires 5 orbits in total. Following the recommendations for Cycle12 HST observations, we have prepared 2 separate visits for the faintest target, one with 3 (Visit05) and one with 2 orbits (Visit06), in order to ease their schedulability. Instead, the 2 targets requiring 4 orbits have been kept in one visit each, but with an extra ACQ/PEAK at the beginning of the third orbit.
