5. Abstract

Over the course of the last decade we have begun to put together a framework of how
galaxies evolve with redshift or lookback time. We find that the gloal star
formation density increases by a factor ten from the current day to redshifts z>1.
This redshift also appears to correspond to the time at which the classical
morphologies of galaxies first began to appear (i.e. at redshifts z>2 galaxies
appear amorphous while at z=1 spiral galaxies are clearly present). If we can study
galaxies at these redshifts we might expect to gain insight in to the galaxy
formation process. The goals of this proposal are, therefore, (1) to measure how
star formation is distributed throughout a galaxy and how this evolves with redshift
and environment, (2) to measure the morphologies of intermediate and high redshift
galaxies in their restframe u and g bands and to compare these to local surveys and
(3) to relate the star formation and morphological properties of galaxies to the
physical processes that drive their evolution by comparing local and high redshift
galaxies that occupy similar environments.
