Abstract Over the course of the last decade we have begun to put together a framework of how galaxies evolve with redshift or lookback time. We find that the gloal star formation density increases by a factor ten from the current day to redshifts z>1. This redshift also appears to correspond to the time at which the classical morphologies of galaxies first began to appear (i.e. at redshifts z>2 galaxies appear amorphous while at z=1 spiral galaxies are clearly present). If we can study galaxies at these redshifts we might expect to gain insight in to the galaxy formation process.
