Abstract It is well-established that low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are far more likely to form per unit light in globular clusters than in the field, probably the result of an increased rate of stellar interactions in the cores of globulars. Recent studies have indicated that 30%-70% of LMXBs in early-type galaxies are located within globular clusters. We propose an archival study of 23 nearby early-type galaxies observed with WFPC2 and ACS in order to compile globular cluster lists for these galaxies for comparison to LMXB positions determined by Chandra. With these lists, we will determine the percent of LMXBs within globular clusters and the effects that age and metallicity have on LMXB formation. The ~700 LMXBs in our sample will vastly improve the statistics of these quantities compared to individual galaxy studies. With these quantities, we will (1) determine whether all LMXBs form within globulars, and (2) estimate the lifetime of LMXBs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9932( 1) - 04/04/03 10:22 - [ 2] Summary Form for Proposal 9932 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
