Abstract The nature of the relationship between galaxy properties and their central supermassive black holes can be uniquely addressed by studying large, homogeneous samples of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) selected according to their hard X-ray emission. The combination of HST and Chandra/XMM provdes the potential to directly study the physical nature of these relationships. We propose an archival study using the GEMS survey of the Chandra Deep Field Soiuth (CDFS) which has the potential to increase by at least a factor of 5 the number of AGN from the GOODS survey, by virtue of the fact that the entire XMM field is covered (30' diameter)\. The resulting sample of 700 - 800 AGN will allow us tro address the nature of the relationship between AGN and host properties, as well as their environments, as a function of cosmic time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9935( 1) - 04/04/03 10:23 - [ 2] Summary Form for Proposal 9935 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
