Abstract We propose to study the evolution in the slope, zero-point, and dispersion of the Tully-Fisher relation for ~300 galaxies in the GOODS-N field. The maximum circular velocities will be extracted from spatially resolved kinematics measured from high quality Keck spectra that reach R(AB)=24 from the public release of the Keck Treasury Survey of GOODS-N. The HST images are needed to model the galaxies' disk components for measures of disk sizes, position angles, and inclinations. These are essential inputs into our algorithms for deriving the maximum circular velocities from the observed kinematics. The main improvements of this proposed project over existing TF studies of distant galaxies will be: 1) having larger samples that will allow reliable tracking of evolution and correlations of residuals with galaxy properties; 2) having well-measured kinematics that reach to z ~ 1.4, when galaxies were younger, evolution should be greater, and galaxies are inferred to be undergoing major assembly and transformation; 3) having use of 4 HST filters that enable uniform restframe luminosities and colors over a wider redshift range; and 4) using deeper, higher resolution HST images that give vastly improved measures of disk properties, including sizes, inclinations, light profiles, morphologies, asymmetries, luminosities, and colors, etc. These HST measurements are not only critical for the conversion of observed kinematics to dynamical mass, but also the key ingredients to study the scaling relations of disks and their early evolution that will place important constraints on theories for disk formation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9936( 1) - 04/04/03 10:24 - [ 2] Summary Form for Proposal 9936 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
