Abstract We propose to analyze high-resolution long-slit echelle spectra of Jupiter's auroral Lyman alpha emissions obtained by STIS during the Cassini flyby of 12/2000-1/2001. We will use a newly-developed velocity shear resonance line radiative transfer code to extract upper atmosphere wind velocities (using an asymmetry produced when the emergent self-reversed line is scattered by fast-moving H atoms high above the aurora). These velocities will then be used (along with other extracted quantities, such as temperature and composition) to constrain a newly-developed Jupiter Thermosphere General Circulation Model (JTGCM). The results will enhance our understanding of how Jupiter's aurora manages to affect its upper atmospheric dynamics on a global scale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9941( 1) - 04/04/03 10:29 - [ 2] Summary Form for Proposal 9941 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
