5. Abstract

We propose to analyze images of COMPACT GALAXIES in the GOODS- North field to obtain
structural parameters (size, ellipticity) and photometric parameters (colors, color
gradients). These data will be combined with spectra from a new Keck Observatory
survey which will provide redshifts, line-widths, star-formation rates and
metallicities.This combined data set will be an order-of-magnitude larger than
previous studies of compact galaxies, and the improved sample size will enable us to
study these galaxies as a function of environment. Given the large redshift range
and additional new parameters (such as metallicity), we will be able to track this
rapidly-evolving and enigmatic galaxy class over a significant fraction of the age
of the universe (z~0 to z~1.4).
