5. Abstract

We propose to use archival ACS data from the GOODS Treasury Program to determine the
space density of elliptical galaxies in the field as a function of redshift. Models
based on the monolithic collapse scenario and on hierarchical assembly will be
compared with the space density vs redshift to determine which theory better
describes the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies.
