Abstract In Cycle 8 we initiated a WFPC2 snapshot survey for resolved, ``Sirius-like'' systems containing hot white-dwarf companions of cooler main-sequence stars. Out of 17 systems observed to date, 8 have been resolved with WFPC2 by using UV filters. Two of the resolved systems---56 Persei and Zeta Cygni---have predicted or known orbital periods short enough that dynamical masses can be determined for the white dwarfs within reasonable times. These would thus add to the extremely small number of white dwarfs presently having accurately and directly measured masses. We propose to image them annually in the UV with WFPC2. In addition, we will observe Zeta Cyg with FGS in order to measure the absolute motion of the optical component, needed for the mass solution. We also propose to observe Sirius itself with WFPC2 over the next 3 Cycles. The resulting astrometric data will not only greatly improve the precision of the binary orbit and the dynamical mass measurements for both the main- sequence and white-dwarf components, but will also test definitively for the claimed presence of a third body in this famous system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9964( 8) - 05/02/04 22:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This is a Long-Term project, necessitated by the relatively long timescales of the orbital motions of our targets. 56 Persei. Our program on 56 Per will consist of once-yearly WFPC2 images, in the F170W filter where the magnitudes of the F4 main-sequence star and the hot WD are comparable. We will also obtain exposures at a longer wavelength (F336W) during the initial visit, in order to identify conclusively which of the two stars marked Aa and Ab in Fig. 1 is in fact the white dwarf (this not being completely clear from our one snapshot single-filter observation). Due to the relatively long nominal orbital period, annual sampling is adequate. Each visit requires only one orbit. The observations will be drizzled in order to achieve maximum accuracy for the astrometry. Total request: 1 WFPC2 orbit each in Cycles 10, 11, and 12. Zeta Cygni. Again it is sufficient to obtain WFPC2 observations once a year, given the 18-year orbital period. We will use F218W, in which both components have nearly equal brightness. Deconvolution techniques should yield the separation to about 1 mas accuracy (S. Casertano, private communication; see also Gatti et al. 1998 for a discussion of disentangling close binaries in WFPC2 data). As in the case of 56 Per, we will also include an F336W frame in Cycle 10 in order to identify the WD with certainty. In addition, as noted above, we need to observe the system with FGS in order to measure the motion of the photocenter. The FGS observations will be obtained twice a year (as a bonus, they will yield a parallax about 2--3 times as accurate as that of Hipparcos). Total request: 1 WFPC2 orbit each in Cycles 10, 11, and 12; 2 FGS orbits each in Cycles 10, 11, and 12. Sirius. Here we need to observe more frequently, in order to test for the perturbation by the putative 6-year companion of one of the stars. We propose to observe with WFPC2 twice per year. We will follow Schroeder et al. (2000) by using the F1042M filter, which suppresses the light of Sirius A to the extent that its image can be centroided using the diffraction spikes (see their paper for details). The short exposures for Sirius A will be alternated with longer exposures for Sirius B at the same telescope pointing, with the process repeated at several different dither positions (a technique Bond is using successfully in his ongoing companion program on Sirius). The photocenter motion of Sirius A is well known from the ground, so we do not need to request any FGS observations (fortunately, since it is too bright anyway.). Total request: 2 WFPC2 orbits each in Cycles 10, 11, and 12.
