Hubble Cycle 32 Proposal Selection

STScI recently conducted the Hubble Space Telescope proposal review and telescope allocation process for Cycle 32. The extremely high quality of the proposals and compelling science was impressive, as was the dedication, commitment and integrity of all those involved. This article summarizes the review process and the results from the Hubble Cycle 32 proposal review, and discusses upcoming changes for Cycle 33 and beyond.

The Hubble Space Telescope Users Committee (STUC) met in person on June 26 and 27. Much of the discussion was devoted to the recent Hubble Operations Paradigm Change Review (OPCR) – NASA’s review of potential cuts to the Hubble budget for Fiscal Year 2025. STScI presented to the STUC some details of proposals to meet the constraints and the impact on operations, grant funding, and staffing.

HASP: Unlocking New Astronomical Research through Enhanced Spectral Data Access

The HASP initiative marks a pivotal advancement in archival HST data. This innovative program significantly enhances the utility of data from COS and STIS, with the ultimate goal of providing easy access to high quality one-dimensional (1-D) spectra that are robustly and flexibly combined at the program and visit level.
NASA Awards Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships for 2024

The highly competitive NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP) recently named 24 new fellows. Fostering excellence and inclusive leadership in astrophysics, the NHFP enables outstanding postdoctoral scientists to pursue independent research in any area of NASA Astrophysics. Each fellowship provides the awardee up to three years of support at a U.S. institution. More than 520 applicants vied for the 2024 fellowships.

Multi-Cycle Treasury Program Opportunity with Hubble Space Telescope in Cycle 32

The primary aim of Multi-Cycle Treasury Programs is to provide an opportunity for the community to address high impact scientific questions that require observations on a scale that cannot be accommodated within the standard time allocation process. Unlike previously, we do not plan to issue a separate call for MCTs, adding yet another deadline for the community. Rather, we will include MCTs as an option in the Cycle 32 Call for Proposals.

The Hubble Space Telescope Users Committee is a group of 12 scientists who represent the interests of Hubble users community. The STUC meets twice a year, most recently in October 2022.

$Hubble telescope with a bright blue spot is at the left-center of the image, which has a black background. The spot is the Didymos-Dimorphos system after impact from the DART spacecraft. The center bright spot has 3 diffraction spikes extending from its core at the 1 o’clock, 7 o’clock, and 10 o’clock positions. There is a small amount of dusty haze just below the southern pole of the center dot. Two tails of ejecta that appear as white streams of material extend out from the center at the 2 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions.$

“stenv” to Supersede Astroconda for STScI Software Distribution

The Space Telescope Science Institute has released “stenv” to supersede Astroconda for its software distribution. Support for Astroconda will end on February 1, 2023.
