Bowen Princeton University N CoI: Dr. George Wallerstein University of Washington N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The availability of 10-m class telescopes with high resolution echelle spectrographs has enabled astronomers to measure accurately the gas-phase abundances of various elements in QSO absorption line systems at high redshifts. These systems offer insights on the chemical evolution of galaxies (and their nearby environments) in their early stages of development. However, in order to obtain total abundances the observations need to be corrected for the depletions caused by the formation of dust, and traditionally people have done so by using the depletion patterns seen in our own Galaxy. There is now evidence that indicates that such patterns in low-metallicity systems differ from those of our Galaxy and thus the corrections may be misleading. The aim of our proposed HST observations is to measure the gas-phase abundances toward stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, which is a low-metallicity dwarf galaxy where there exist good measurements of stellar comparison abundances. We plan to record ISM absorption features from STIS medium-resolution echelle spectra for 14 stars in the SMC that are known to have varying levels of depletion, so that we can derive the gas-phase abundance patterns of the elements Ni, Fe, Cr, Mn, Si, Mg, Ge, Kr, Zn, and perhaps P. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ For our choice of targets, we have selected stars that are reasonably bright, have projected rotation velocities v sin i > 60 km/s, have had their interstellar Ti abundances measured by Welty & Crowther (2010) and have had H I and H2 column densities listed by Welty, et al. (2012). For these sight lines, the depletions of Ti range from a mild value of -0.76 to an extreme of -1.73 dex. We feel that it is important to include Ti in our study, because it's an alpha element that has a depletion behavior similar to those of Fe-peak elements (in our Galaxy). The radial velocity of interstellar gas in the SMC is at about +150 km/s, which is well removed from the typical velocities of gas in our galaxy. The locations of the targets are shown in Fig. 3 of the Phase I proposal . They have visual magnitudes that range between 11.85 to 14.25, so they clearly will not violate the count rate limits for the STIS MAMA detector operating in the echelle modes. Acquisitions should be straightforward, since there are no other stars that are in close proximity in the sky to our desired targets. The unocculted time available for each orbit at the location of the SMC is 61 13778( 4) - 08-Jun-2015 16:53:31 - [ 2] minutes. (CVZ observations are not practical: only half of the targets are candidates for CVZ observations, and the visit planner reveals that for those targets only one day in the year is available.) After subtracting acquisition and instrument setup times, we expect to have 2460 seconds of integration time during the first orbit of a visit and 2900 seconds of time in subsequent orbits of the same visit. Our strategy is to achieve a minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per resolution element of 20 over the wavelength range 1605-2673A at a wavelength resolving power R = 30, 000. These observations will allow us to obtain accurate measurements for the weak lines of Si II, Ni II, Fe II, Zn II, Cr II and Mn II. We will achieve this by observing the targets with the STIS E230M echelle mode with two different central wavelength settings, one centered at 1978A and the other at 2269A. Over a region of overlap, 1865-2382A, we should obtain a minimum SNR = sqrt{2} X 20. For a few targets, the quantization of observing time into integral numbers of orbits will result in our achieving SNRs slightly better than our specification. For coverage of the lines of Kr I, Ge II, and Mg II, plus doubling the coverage of Fe II and Ni II, we plan to observe the wavelength range 1123-1717A with the E140M echelle mode of STIS, again with the goal of achieving a minimum SNR = 20. For some stars, AzVs 18, 26, 47, 80, 95, 456 and Sk 191, existing data in the MAST archive have coverage in this wavelength region at a somewhat reduced SNR (see Fig. 4 of the Phase I proposal); we will not reobserve these wavelengths, even though the SNR is somewhat below our desired minimum. For two stars, AzVs 207 and 476, we will omit the E140M observations because the orbit requirements are too costly. For another star, HD5980, comprehensive observations have already been taken that exceed our minimum objectives by a large margin over all wavelengths (see the top right panel of Fig. 4), hence this star will not be observed at all. However, we plan to analyze archival data for this star in the same manner that we treat the cases that will be observed in this program. Table 1 of the Phase I proposal lists the transitions that we will utilize for various elements in their favored ionization states for H I regions. We plan to analyze the absorption features using the apparent optical depth method (AOD) to derive the column densities N=10^{14.576} integral tau(v)/(f*lambda)dv. For pairs of moderately strong features that yield different results (caused by unresolved saturations, which result in the weak lines showing larger column densities than the strong ones), we plan to use the correction scheme outlined by Jenkins (1996) to compensate for the effects of saturation.
