Deep UV spectra have revealed intense emission from nebular CIII] and CIV, implying a hard radiation field that is rarely seen at lower redshifts. Unfortunately, we are currently completely unprepared to interpret these features, owing largely to shortcomings in our understanding of the low metallicity stellar populations thought to power this line emission. Fortunately, HST/COS has uncovered a sample of nearby metal poor galaxies with UV nebular line spectra approaching those seen at z>6. The discovery of these galaxies opens the door for a comprehensive investigation of the low metallicity stellar populations that likely dominate at z>6. Here we propose to obtain ultra-deep (6 orbit) COS/G160M spectra capable of measuring stellar photospheric and wind absorption features in a sample of 9 metal poor galaxies with intense CIV and CIII] emission. The data will provide quantitative constraints on the metallicity of the massive stars required to power the hard radiation fields, establishing the best empirical baseline for interpreting reionization-era spectra. The proposed sample size is chosen to reveal how the ionizing spectrum varies with stellar metallicity and age in the parameter range expected at z>6. For each galaxy, we will simultaneously fit the stellar absorption features and nebular lines, providing a powerful stress test of low-metallicity models for massive stars. If this UV spectral database is not obtained while COS is still functioning, the interpretation of reionization era galaxy spectra will be severely jeopardized throughout the JWST era. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ This program will deliver deep 6-orbit spectroscopy with G160M probing the stellar continuum and nebular emission of 9 unique targets distinguished by the presence of nebular high-ionization C IV emission identified in low-resolution single-orbit spectroscopy with COS/G140L. The target galaxies all have high-quality SDSS imaging and spectroscopic observations which we leverage in planning the observations, alongside the already conducted COS/G140L observations. 16677( 9) - 19-Feb-2025 13:06:54 - [ 2] Coordinates and acquisition: High-precision coordinates are extracted from the SDSS photometric catalog centroid, confirmed to agree precisely with the peak of u-band emission. These images have already been aligned with UCAC/ICRF, and the coordinates are accurate to <0.1". To acquire each target we thus conduct a simple ACQ/IMAGE sequence, following best practices established from a number of GO programs targeting similar objects including these targets. The targets do not meet the COS definition of 'extended' of FWHM>0.6", but they deviate from point sources at HST resolution. We fit 2d Gaussians to the previously-acquired high-SNR TACQ images for these targets, and determine a median FWHM of 0.2" for the peak of NUV light (all <0.5"). Exposure times are then calculated conservatively to provide S/N of 40 for an extended source with peak surface brightness determined from the ratio of the COS/G140L flux at 2000A (extrapolated to the acquisition bandpass assuming a flat continuum in fnu) to the area of a 0.2" radius circle. The resulting exposure times are commensurate with acqusition times for previous programs targeting similar galaxies. Observing plan: In accordance with STScI recommendations to maximize the scheduling of observations in Cycle 29, we split each 6-orbit allocation into two visits of 3 orbits each per object. After acqusition, each orbit is filled with a single spectroscopic exposure at fixed FP-POS, with full buffer dumps and grating shifts occurring during occultation. All four FP-POS positions are cycled through over the course of the two visits for each object to minimize the impact of fixed-pattern noise on the final stacked spectra. The full set of exposures for each object are calculated to deliver S/N>5 in the continuum at 1500 A for each object, sufficient to achieve our target constraints on the stellar continuum. Safety: All of the target objects have previously been observed successfully with Mirror A ACQ/IMAGE exposures and with G140L spectroscopy. None of the imaging exposures present any warnings from the imaging ETC even under the incorrect assumption of a point source. The BOT reports no safety issues according to GALEX analysis. One target (J171236) lacks GALEX coverage; the GSC2 reports a Health/Safety concern for the acquisiton exposure for this galaxy, but the target 'star' of concern is actually the target galaxy which is unresolved by DSS imaging but clearly resolved and not a Health/Safety threat at SDSS/HST and resolution and NUV wavelengths.
