There are very few galaxies whose internal structure has been resolved while their circumgalactic medium has also been sampled. We have created a sample of 34 AGN-galaxy pairs (25 new and 9 archival) consisting of isolated and highly-inclined (i>60) galaxies included in the MaNGA survey, with AGN impact parameters <0.5 R(vir). The mass, star-formation rate, and kinematics of all these galaxies have been mapped in detail. Selecting isolated and highly-inclined galaxies minimizes confusion due to environmental and projection effects. The sightlines cover a range of azimuths and are at low impact parameters, where the detection rate of Lya is >80% and that of metals >50%, allowing us to characterize the azimuthal and radial variations of the velocities, column density, volume density, metallicity, and linewidths, using absorption lines of hydrogen (HI), low-ions (CII/ SiII) and intermediate ions (SiIII). We will correlate these properties with galaxy mass and star-formation rate. We will further compare the CGM measurements with simulations of similar galaxies, also projected edge-on. This sample will provide the cleanest test to-date of whether CGM absorbers exhibit the expected bimodality associated with outflows along the major axis and inflows along the minor axis. Further, we will be able to compare the motions of the CGM absorbers with the host galaxies to assess if the gas is co-rotating and if so, out to what distance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propose a 118 orbit program to study the CGM surrounding 34 highly-inclined MaNGA galaxies using HST/COS G130M observations toward 24 new (supplemented by 9 archival) background AGN that lie within 0.5 Rvir of these galaxies. We require a minimum S/N ratio of ~8, so that we can measure the kinematical properties of the absorbers and detect ions down to an equivalent width limit of ~30 mA, corresponding to logN(HI)~13.1, logN(CII)~13.3, logN(SiII)~12.3 and logN(SiIII)~12.2. The AGN were found from a list of 1.2 million QSOs that we compiled by combining various catalogues. This was correlated with GALEX data to determine 17734( 16) - 23-Jul-2025 11:36:21 - [ 2] their FUV fluxes. The optical and GALEX images of each individual QSO were checked using the Legacy Survey sky server (www.legacysurvey.org) to make sure the source was not extended. We then used the COS ETC to calculate exposure times needed to reach S/N~8 near a representative wavelength for redshifted\Lya (1250 A, or cz=8, 600 km/s). The COS-G130M grating will be set to a central wavelength of 1291 A on LP5, using FP-POS=3 and 4. In the first orbit, guide star acquisition takes about 200 seconds and exposure and grating setup is 200 seconds. Reacquisition in subsequent orbits takes about 400 seconds. This leaves about 2, 000 seconds of exposure time in the first orbit and 2, 300 seconds in subsequent orbits. Targets requiring 4 orbits or fewer can be completed in one visit, while those requiring more orbits will be split into two visits. The targets are not bright enough to pose a bright limit threat to COS. 6 targets require 8 orbit targets which into two 4 orbit visits. The 2 7 orbit target gets a 4 and 3 orbit visit. One 6 orbit targets gets 2 visits. One visit is allocated to the 6 4 orbit targets. 5 targets get a 3 orbit visit, and 2 orbits are sufficient for 2 targets.
