Program Type
JWST observing programs are categorized into a number of different types:- AR - Archival Research program
- CAL/<SI> - Calibration program, where <SI> is the science instrument
- COM/<SI> - Commissioning program, where <SI> is the science instrument
- DD - Director's Discretionary program
- ENG - Engineering program
- ERS - Early Release Science program
- GO - General Observer program
- GTO - Guaranteed Time Observer program
- NASA - Observing program conducted at the direction of NASA
- SURVEY - Program designed to fill short gaps that might be created during the scheduling process
Contacts at STScI
- Program Coordinator: The Program Coordinator (PC) is the primary technical point of contact during the development, implementation, planning and scheduling of a program. The PC and Instrument Scientist (IS - see below) work together to prepare programs for flight execution with the PC concentrating on technical issues and questions.
- Instrument Scientist: The Instrument Scientist (IS) is the scientific contact during the development, implementation, planning, scheduling, and data reduction and analysis of a program. The instrument scientist and the Program Coordinator work together to prepare programs for flight execution with the instrument scientist concentrating on scientific issues and questions.
Explanation of Program Status
A program normally goes through the following steps (in order) from submission to execution:
- 1. Pending Submission
- A revised submission of your program is expected. For details, contact your Program Coordinator.
- 2. Implementation
- Your Program Coordinator is preparing your visits for flight scheduling. The preparation may be complete for some visits, but at least one visit is still being worked. Please see the visit statuses for details and contact your Program Coordinator if you need more information.
- 3. Flight Ready
- All of your visits have been implemented and are available as candidates for flight scheduling.
- 4. Scheduled
- All of your visits have been placed on a finalized observing schedule. Please see the visit statuses for details and contact your Program Coordinator if you need more information.
- 5. Program has been Completed
- For most programs, this means that all observations have been made. In some cases, technical or other problems may prevent the execution of certain observations. Such a program may be marked completed if the completion threshold has been met. Please contact your Program Coordinator if you have questions about this.
Other Statuses
- Withdrawn
- Your program has been withdrawn from the observing cycle. Please contact your Program Coordinator if this is in error.
- Skipped
- All of the visits were on a finalized observing schedule transmitted to JWST, but JWST's onboard software skipped these visits. Contact your Program Coordinator for further information.
- Failed
- Problems were encountered during the execution of this proposal such that the data from some visits was severely degraded in quantity or quality. All visits in this proposal are either failed or withdrawn. Contact your Program Coordinator for further information.
- Other
- Please contact your Program Coordinator for an explanation of the state of your program.
Time Allocation Change Types
- ADMINISTRATION
- The program's allocation was initially populated incorrectly and was changed to the correct value.
- FAILURE_REPEAT
- Time was added to account for a failed visit that will be repeated.
- INSTRUMENT_PROBLEM
- The program's allocation changed due to changes in instrument performance. Such a performance change might be temporary (e.g. a safing event), or it might be something permanent.
- OBSERVER_REQUESTED
- The observer requested an allocation increase, and it was approved by the TTRB or the Director.
- OVERHEAD_CHANGE
- The overhead model used in APT changed, and the time allocation was increased or decreased to compensate for that overhead change. The intent is that an observer should neither be penalized by nor benefit from an overhead change.
- SKIPPED_REPEAT
- Time was added to account for a skipped visit that will be repeated.
- TRANSFER
- Time was transferred from one program to another.
