    New research shows that Terzan 5 contains four separate generations of stars, confirming it as the prototype of a “bulge fossil fragment.”

    A dramatically crowded starfield that looks like a just-shaken snow globe. The black background of space, which is clearer at the edges, is covered by thousands of tiny white, orange, and blue points of light, which are stars. The stars are most concentrated in the center, forming a roughly circular orb, and sparser at the edges of the image. Several larger orange stars, particularly those largest near the edges of the frame, have prominent diffraction spikes.

    This astronomical image is speckled with thousands of stars against the black background of space. Most stars are visible only as white pinpoints. The great majority of stars are crowding the image’s center, which appears as an irregular round shape. Most stars in the center of this cluster are whiter, and those along periphery edges yellower. The stars across the entire image range in color from blue to white to yellowish red. A few of the stars appear a bit larger and brighter than the rest, with six diffraction spikes.

    Nearby stellar nursery sheds light on massive star formation

    In what appears as a celestial dreamscape, a blue and black sky filled with brilliant stars covers about two thirds of the image. The stars are different sizes and shades of white, beige, yellow, and light orange. Across the bottom third of the scene is a craggy, mountain-like vista with spire-like peaks and deep, seemingly misty valleys. These so-called mountains appear in varying shades of orange, yellow, and brown. Above their soaring spires is a wispy, ethereal white cloud that stretched horizontally across the scene. Steam appears to rise from the mountaintops and join with this cloud. At the top right corner of the image, a swath of orange and brown structure cuts diagonally across the sky.

    At center right is a compact star cluster composed of luminous red, blue, and white points of light. Faint jets with clumpy, diffuse material extend in various directions from the bright cluster. Above and to the right is a smaller cluster of stars. Translucent red wisps of material stretch across the scene. Background galaxies are scattered across this swath of space, appearing as small blue-white and orange-white dots or fuzzy, thin disks.

    Long Trail of Clumpy Stars Follows Galaxy Interactions

    This is a picture of a galaxy with a peculiar S-shape. It has a bright milky-white core at the center. Twin arms of blue stars wrap around the core. One arm looks particularly stretched out due to the gravitational tidal pull of a neighboring galaxy. Bright, young, whitish star clusters are strung along the arm like a string of pearls. They formed as a result of the collision process.

    Filaments of dust and gas festoon this star-forming region in a new infrared image from MIRI

    The lower half of this image contains arcs of bluish material that form a boat-like shape. One end of these arcs points to the top right of the image, while the other end points toward the bottom left. Another plume of blue filaments expands from the center to the top left, resembling the mast of a sailboat. Within and extending beyond the boat shape are translucent curtains of pink, which appear atop the boat shape as well and cover most of the image. Stars are noticeably scarce. A couple dozen bright pink patches with six short diffraction spikes are scattered within the blue filaments. Many faint blue dots, or stars, also speckle the background, which is black or dark gray.

    This image shows a compact beehive-like structure of hundreds of thousands of stars crowded together. Because of scattering by interstellar dust, the stars on the left side of the image appear redder. The stars toward the right side of the image are bluish-white. The image is sprinkled with bright blue foreground stars. There is also a smattering of bright red giant stars across the image.

    A star cluster within a nebula. The center of the image contains arcs of orange and pink gas that form a boat-like shape. Another plume of orange and pink gas expands from the center to the top left of the image. To the right of this plume is a large cluster of white stars. There are more of these white stars and galaxies of different sizes spread throughout the image.

    Spatial Distribution of NGC 346 Stars Thumbnail: A black field speckled with white stars, and a large, irregularly shaped patch of purple in the center. Within this purple patch are white stars and other white clumps, along with some thin, dark lanes within the right side of the purple patch. The top half of the purple patch is more densely formed and covered in more white stars and other white clumps than the wispy bottom of the patch. Over the top half of the purple patch is a red spiral with a dashed white line running through its center, like a spine. The red spiral increases in thickness as it approaches the tightest point of the spiral. Beneath the densest part of the spiral is the densest concentration of stars.
