Example Profile

Assistant Astronomer
Aaryn Carter headshot

I am an astronomer focused on detecting and characterizing exoplanets through direct and indirect observational techniques. My primary research focus is exoplanet science in the era of JWST. I am particularly interested in the advantages it will provide for directly imaging sub-Jupiter mass exoplanets. My overarching goal in research is to improve the global understanding of planetary formation and evolution by detecting exoplanets in previously unexplored regions of parameter space and characterizing exoplanet atmospheres across the known population.

Before beginning my position at STScI, I was a Postdoctoral Scholar at UC Santa Cruz. I undertook leading roles in the JWST Early Release Science Programs for transiting and directly imaging exoplanets. I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Exeter, UK, where I worked on producing the most accurate simulations of JWST coronagraphic performance to date, as well as state-of-the-art observational atmospheric characterizations of transiting hot Jupiters.
