X-ray observations provide a highly efficient and physically meaningful way to investigate the population of galaxy clusters at low and high redshift. Measurement of the evolution of the X-ray cluster population allows very strong constraints to be made on Omega and cluster physics. Measurement of the metallicity of the intracluster gas and its relationship to other cluster properties can provide insight to star formation histories and the formation pathways of massive systems in a hierarchical universe.
