Mr. Ben Carollo is the chief of staff at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), where he serves as a senior advisor to our director, oversees the director’s strategic initiatives, and works with stakeholders to enhance collaboration to work effectively across multiple missions and divisions.
Prior to joining the institute, Mr. Carollo led The Rockefeller Foundation’s strategy to build the field of climate and health for two years in Washington, D.C. In this role, he was responsible for building a global coalition of funders and advocates to address a wide range of climate change impacts on health, managed philanthropic investments, and built relationships with the foundation’s global health partners.
As the principal advisor to the chief operating officer of the Federal Housing Finance Agency in Washington from 2020 to 2022, Mr. Carollo led organization transformation initiatives, strategic and operational planning, the employee engagement program, and projects to maximize organizational efficiency. At the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Washington, he served as the program manager for the agency’s business practice and technology initiative, managing cross-functional teams of technical experts and senior executives to optimize business practices with technology. He previously served as the chief of staff in the agency’s information technology (IT) unit, managing the agency’s IT governance, portfolio planning process, and process improvement efforts.
He has also served as the director of federal research relations at Indiana University. Before that, Mr. Carollo served as the chief of the public affairs branch and as an advocacy relations manager at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, where he managed media relations and stakeholder engagement programs.
He has also worked as an executive leadership coach and coordinated undergraduate research training programs at Indiana University. He holds certificates in leadership coaching from George Mason University and in organizational development from DePaul University.
In his spare time, Mr. Carollo enjoys baking, yoga, and playing the French horn.
