PMSU2 - Table 1A


Positions, distances, absolute magnitudes and spectral types for pCNS3 late-K and M dwarf stars south of declination -30o.
Column 1 lists a running number, the line number in the pCNS3 . This is not an offical designation, but provides a useful means of identifying individual stars in a catalogue of 3700+ stars. Column 2 lists the object name; columns 3 and 4 give the position, for equinox and epoch 2000, derived from the source listed in column 5. The latter references are:
1. Co-ordinates measured at the Palomar 60-inch telescope
2. Co-ordinates measured at either the Palomar 200-inch telescope, Keck or the AAT
3. HST Guide Star catalogue (version 1)
4. pCNS3
5. Digital Sky Survey images
6. Hipparcos catalogue
7. 2MASS 2nd incremental release
In several cases, the positions given in PMSU1 were in error; as far as possible, those errors are corrected in the current tables.
Column 6 lists the absolute visual magnitude, column 7 the distance (in parsecs) and column 8 the fractional (percentage) uncertainty in the distance. Those distance estimates were derive by combining the available trigonometric parallax measurements with photometric and spectroscopic distance estimates, and columns 9 and 10 list the relative weights given to the astrometric (trig) and spectrophotometric (sp) measurements. Where possible, we have updated the distance estimates using new results, notably trigonometric parallax data from the Hipparcos satellite (ESA, 1997): ftrig=110 denotes an Hipparcos distance estimate; a value of 105 indicates that the distance is based on Hipparcos parallax data for a companion star (usually the primary in a binary system); 150 indicates that the data are taken from the pCNS3. Column 11 lists the spectral type, and references to notes on individual stars are given in column 12. Where possible, we provide links to ascii versions of our spectroscopic data.

E: NN 629 = Hy 207 is listed twice in the pCNS3
F: NN 1752 - Leggett \& Hawkins (1988) suggest that this star might be a giant, on the basis of their observed JHK colours, but our spectra are consistent with classification as a dwarf. The V magnitude listed by LH88 is 8.07, while the CNS3 magnitude is 11.4 (photometric estimate). We observed a star of the latter magnitude. There is a nearby 8th magnitude SAO star (SAO 7382 - listed as K5, luminosity class unknown but with no measured proper motion) which Leggett \& Hawkins may have observed by mistake.
G: NN 2064 - GJ 1167 was suspected to be binary, but the pCNS3 notes that GJ 1167B does not exist.
H: NN 2172 - LHS 2789 is not listed as a biinary in the pCNS3.
I: NN 2426 - Eggen (1980) notes that GJ 2112 appears to be a double in good seeing, but there are no confirming observations.
J: NN 2772 - The pCNS3 lists Gl 678.1B as a line-of-sight optical companion.
K: NN 2805 - GSC036B-821 is listed in the pCNS3 as a companion of V796 (NN 2804), but we find that the radial velocity differ by 50 km/sec.
L: NN 2935 - GJ 1230A is actually a near equal-mass spectroscopic binary (Gizis & Reid, 1996).
M: NN 199 - Gl 49 forms a wide common proper motion pair with Gl 51 (NN 204).
N: NN 1527 - Gl 360 is a common proper motion companion of Gl 362 (NN 1529), separation 90 arcseconds, PA=75o.
O: NN 2259 - Weis(1993) lists a possible companion with V=14.10, (V-I)$_K$=2.93 at separation 58", PA=250o.
P: pCNS3 lists optical companions for these stars. As yet, none are confirmed as binaries.
