According to the ABQ Journal, the above photo was taken when Columbia was about 36 degrees above the western horizon from a location near Albuquerque, New Mexico by Rick Cleis, Robert Johnson and Roger Petty using a 3.5" Questar aimed at a set of salvaged tracking mirrors controlled by a Macintosh computer.

At this time, Columbia was in a 75-degree left bank, approximately 40-degree angle-of-attack, travelling approximately Mach 20.5, above 215,000 feet, descending at a rate of about 3500 ft/min.
