Spiral Galaxy NGC 2841

Close-up view of a spiral galaxy, which fills the frame diagonally from upper left to lower right. The circular-shaped galaxy is not seen perfectly face-on, but is slightly tilted. At the center is a bright yellow core surrounded by a large, fuzzy yellow area. Brown dust trails spiral outward through the yellow area and beyond. Near the edges, the arms are dotted with blue and red stars. The mix of red and blue stars outside the halo looks purple. The lower left and upper right corners reveal a dark, starless background.

About The Image

Color Info
This image is a composite of separate exposures acquired by the WFC3 instrument on HST. Several filters were used to sample broad and narrow wavelength ranges. The color results from assigning different hues (colors) to each monochromatic (grayscale) image associated with an individual filter. In this case, the assigned colors are: Blue: F336W (U) Green: F547M (y) Red/orange: F657N (H-alpha + [N II]) Red: F814W (I)
