Collection Overview

While small in size, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) library houses a wide array of resources, both online and in print. If you are interested in learning more about our collections or have questions about borrowing policies for non-STScI affiliates, please contact us at library@stsci.edu or search the library catalog. We actively acquire materials related to:

  • Astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology
  • Optics
  • Systems engineering, programming, and design
  • Project management
  • Scholarly publishing and scientific communications
  • Space policy
  • Business and administration
  • Data visualization
  • Public outreach
  • Minorities and diversity in the sciences and social issues surrounding science in general

You can learn more about our collection development strategy by viewing the STScI Library Collection Development Guidelines. The library supports both day-to-day resource needs of STScI staff and provides materials that illustrate the social and historical context in which the institute’s flagship missions were conceived and launched. Our library houses a mix of print and digital monographs, research journals, popular periodicals, NASA technical publications, dissertations, staff and institute publications, standards documentation, historic surveys and catalogs, documentaries on DVD related to STScI and its missions, and other formats typical of a modern astronomy library.

The library also maintains a collection of historical and current publications from various observatories, including annual reports, newsletters, and observing manuals. We participate in the WorldCat Interlibrary Loan system under the OCLC symbol STI.
