Supporting Science Operations

In 2009, STScI Director Matt Mountain appointed the JWST Advisory Committee (JSTAC) to advise on the Institute’s readiness to support science operations with JWST, the implementation of NASA’s science policies, and other matters related to the General Observer program. Subsequently, the JSTAC advised STScI Director Ken Sembach. Garth Illingworth was the JSTAC chair. The final meeting of the JSTAC took place in July 2017.

Over the years, the committee wrote more than a dozen letters to the STScI Director. These letters made recommendations for maximizing JWST science, and include topics such as:

  • The Early Release Science program
  • Proprietary time
  • The proposal selection process
  • Observing overheads
  • Parallel observations
  • GO funding level

The JSTAC charter and membership information as well as committee letters and related presentations, are available at the bottom of this page.
