Community Missions Office

We support a diverse portfolio of missions initiated by the astronomy community with our extensive science operations experience, products, and services.

Members of the community missions office at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) have more than 25 years of experience creating and supporting programs for a range of missions, both large and small, throughout the astronomical community, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Our team adapts tools and services we have developed to serve each mission through collaborations with the science community.

We broker partnerships between mission proposal teams and STScI personnel to provide optimized science operations, including support for calls for proposals, peer reviews, planning and scheduling of observations, data processing and analysis, data management and archive services, as well as education and public outreach. We also develop tools and methods to communicate with the science community. Our philosophy is to integrate the scientific perspective into all aspects of every mission to maximize the scientific return through cost-effective application of our products, services, and operations.

We help scientific missions and study teams:

  • Maximize science return
  • Adapt our science systems engineering expertise
  • Select our customized science operations products and services
  • Advance new opportunities
