Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find specific information about the dates of the program and the deadline to apply?
Look on the program details page.
Do you have a sample list of past projects students have worked on?
The work done by students is determined by our staff researchers. Accepted students will be introduced to their prospective supervisor. View a list of the 2021 prospective projects.
Will I be paid for this experience?
Students will receive a monetary stipend that is comparable to summer internships at other U.S. astronomy institutions. Find more information about the stipend.
I am not a U.S. citizen. May I apply?
Both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply. For non-U.S. citizens, we will assist you in obtaining a work visa if necessary.
Am I eligible to apply if I am not currently an undergraduate student?
While SASP is primarily open to upper-division undergraduates, other candidates may be considered on an individual basis.
Can I just send you my résumé and ask to be considered?
No. You must submit a full application. The application link will appear on our website beginning on January 1, 2024.
Will I receive a notification that my application has been received?
Once your application has been received, you will receive a notification at the email address listed in your application.
When will I know if I am accepted into the program?
You will receive an email if you are matched with a project.
Can I start the program early?
Unfortunately, you may not.
May I leave early?
We expect students to spend the entire internship working for STScI, but you may be able to leave the program early. We realize that academic schedules vary significantly and that course schedules may not coincide for every student. We require that all students complete at least eight weeks of the 9-week program.
Do I have to pay my own way to and from Baltimore?
Transportation to and from Baltimore is included.
