Introduction

Enhancing the representation of women and minorities at the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Distinguished astronomers from the United States and the international community are invited to visit the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) for a period of three to four weeks as part of the Caroline Herschel Visitor Program. During these visits, astronomers lecture on their scientific projects, discuss scientific and relevant cultural issues with staff, act as mentors to junior scientists at the institute, especially women and other underrepresented groups, and consult with STScI management about a range of initiatives to improve minority and gender representation within our staff and across the field of astronomy.

Caroline Herschel visitors are required to spend at least three, but preferably four, weeks at the institute over a period of two years. This time may be divided into multiple visits, ideally at least one week each. Travel and local expenses are reimbursed, but the program does not include salary support. Program invitees are suggested by a committee appointed by the Science Mission Office and are approved by the director.
